XVII. 1. And <strong>the</strong>y took '"and broughf me to a place in<br />

which those who were <strong>the</strong>r-e were like flaming fire^ and when<br />

<strong>the</strong>y wished, <strong>the</strong>y appeared as men. 2. And <strong>the</strong>y brought me<br />

to <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> darkness, and to a mountain <strong>the</strong> point <strong>of</strong> whose<br />

summit reached to heaven. 3. And I saw <strong>the</strong> places <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

luminaries '"and <strong>the</strong> treasuries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stars"' and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> thunder,<br />

'"and^ in <strong>the</strong> uttermost depths, where were a fiery bow and arrows<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir quivei', "^and a fiery sword^ and all <strong>the</strong> lightnings.<br />

XVII—XIX. These chapters are<br />

certainly foreign to <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> this<br />

section. They are full <strong>of</strong> Greek ele-<br />

ments. We have references in IV^- ' to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pyriplilegethon, Styx, Acheron and<br />

Cocytus : in 17^' '> ' IS^", to <strong>the</strong> Ocean<br />

Stream : in 17° to Hades in <strong>the</strong> west.<br />

Again, 18'"° is a duplicate account <strong>of</strong><br />

241-=; 18i2-i« a duplicate account <strong>of</strong><br />

21i-«, and 18" <strong>of</strong> 21'-", though in <strong>the</strong><br />

last case <strong>the</strong>re are important diver-<br />

gencies. Again, according to 15^^-16<br />

an end was set to <strong>the</strong> destructive<br />

agencies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fallen angels by <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

imprisonment (cf. lO""'* l^")] whereas<br />

according to 19^ <strong>the</strong> spirits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fallen<br />

angels are represented as seducing man-<br />

kind to sacrifice to demons. Notwith-<br />

standing <strong>the</strong>se chapters belong to <strong>the</strong><br />

Enoch tradition.<br />
