78 The Booh <strong>of</strong> Enoch [Sect. II<br />
second voice I heard blessing <strong>the</strong> Elect One and <strong>the</strong> elect ones<br />
who hang upon <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits. 6. And <strong>the</strong> third voice<br />
I heard pray and intercede for those who dwell on <strong>the</strong> earth<br />
and supplicate in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits. 7. And<br />
I heard <strong>the</strong> fourth voice fending <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> Satans and forbidding<br />
<strong>the</strong>m to come before <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits to accuse <strong>the</strong>m who<br />
dwell on <strong>the</strong> earth. 8. After that I asked <strong>the</strong> angel <strong>of</strong> peace<br />
who went with me, who showed me everything that is hidden<br />
'Who are <strong>the</strong>se four presences which I have seen and whose<br />
praises <strong>the</strong> Elect and <strong>the</strong> elect ones.<br />
Conformably to his name (from XS^,<br />
to heal) he is appointed to heal <strong>the</strong><br />
woimds and ills <strong>of</strong> men (ver. 9) : <strong>of</strong>.<br />
Tobit 121* ' God sent me (Raphael) to<br />
Ileal <strong>the</strong>e '<br />
; and 3" ' Raphael was sent<br />
to heal <strong>the</strong>m both '.<br />
In Rabbinic writ-<br />
ings he was <strong>the</strong> power that presided<br />
over medicine; cf. Eisenmeng. Untd.<br />
Jud. ii. 380. See also 10' 20\ The<br />
Elect One. This designation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Messiah comes from Is. 42^. Its later<br />
use seems to be confined to <strong>the</strong> P.irables<br />
(see 38") and St. Luke 9=5 outo's<br />
iariv 6 vl6s fiov 5 iK\i\iy^kvos = * <strong>the</strong><br />
Elect One ' (W. and H.). This, <strong>the</strong><br />
correct text, lias been preserved in <strong>the</strong><br />
Ethiopio N.T.: St. Luke 23=5 '<strong>the</strong><br />
Christ <strong>of</strong> God <strong>the</strong> Elect One '.<br />
And<br />
<strong>the</strong> elect ones, q ' <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> elect ones '.<br />
6. The third presence is Gabriel,<br />
whose task is that <strong>of</strong> intercession on<br />
behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inhabiters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth,<br />
Cf, Test, Lev. 3° ' In it are <strong>the</strong> arch-<br />
angels who minister and make pro-<br />
pitiation to <strong>the</strong> Lord for all <strong>the</strong><br />
sins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous ', As <strong>the</strong> hero<br />
or strong one <strong>of</strong> God (T33 and PK)<br />
he is naturally set over all <strong>the</strong> powers<br />
(ver. 9). Pray and intercede . . .<br />
supplicate. These verbs are in <strong>the</strong><br />
plural in all MSS. but d. Those<br />
who dwell, &c, : see 37^. 7,<br />
The fourth is Phanuel, who is set over<br />
<strong>the</strong> repentance and hope <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inheri-<br />
tors <strong>of</strong> eternal life (ver, 9). He pre.<br />
vents <strong>the</strong> Satans from appearing before<br />
<strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits to accuse men. The<br />
Satans appear here for <strong>the</strong> first time in<br />
Enoch, 40', They seem to belong to<br />
a, counter kingdom <strong>of</strong> evil, ruled by<br />
a chief called Satan, 53'. They existed<br />
as evil agencies before <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Watchers ; for <strong>the</strong> guilt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter<br />
consisted in becoming subject to Satan,<br />
54^, This view harmonizes exactly<br />
with that <strong>of</strong> Gen. 3* combined with<br />
&'*, These Satans bad <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong><br />
access into heaven, 40' (cf. Job 1'<br />
Zech. 3)—a privilege denied to <strong>the</strong><br />
Watchers, 13° 14^. Their functions<br />
were threefold : <strong>the</strong>y tempted to evil,<br />
69^1 " ; <strong>the</strong>y accused <strong>the</strong> dwellers upon<br />
earth, 40' ; <strong>the</strong>y punished <strong>the</strong> con-<br />
demned. In this last character <strong>the</strong>y<br />
are technically called ' angels <strong>of</strong> pun-<br />
ishment', 53=561 62" 631; thig de-<br />
signation has been taken over into <strong>the</strong><br />
Interpolations : cf, 66^ (note). The Talmud<br />
(cf. Weber, Jiid. Theol. 251-254)<br />
does not draw this clear line <strong>of</strong> demar-<br />
cation between <strong>the</strong> Satans and <strong>the</strong> fallen<br />
angels, but ra<strong>the</strong>r confuses <strong>the</strong>ir attri-<br />
butes just as in ch. 69. For <strong>the</strong> close<br />
connexion between <strong>the</strong> Demonology <strong>of</strong><br />
Enoch and <strong>the</strong> N, T, see Gen. Intro-<br />
duction. 8. Augel <strong>of</strong> peace. See<br />
