second voice I heard blessing the Elect One and the elect ones
who hang upon the Lord of Spirits. 6. And the third voice
I heard pray and intercede for those who dwell on the earth
and supplicate in the name of the Lord of Spirits. 7. And
I heard the fourth voice fending off the Satans and forbidding
them to come before the Lord of Spirits to accuse them who
dwell on the earth. 8. After that I asked the angel of peace
who went with me, who showed me everything that is hidden
'Who are these four presences which I have seen and whose
praises the Elect and the elect ones.
Conformably to his name (from XS^,
to heal) he is appointed to heal the
woimds and ills of men (ver. 9) : of.
Tobit 121* ' God sent me (Raphael) to
Ileal thee '
; and 3" ' Raphael was sent
to heal them both '.

Elect One. This designation of the
Messiah comes from Is. 42^. Its later
use seems to be confined to the P.irables
(see 38") and St. Luke 9=5 outo's
iariv 6 vl6s fiov 5 iK\i\iy^kvos = * the
Elect One ' (W. and H.). This, the
correct text, lias been preserved in the
Ethiopio N.T.: St. Luke 23=5 'the
Christ of God the Elect One '.

the elect ones, q ' of the elect ones '.
6. The third presence is Gabriel,
whose task is that of intercession on
behalf of the inhabiters of the earth,
Cf, Test, Lev. 3° ' In it are the arch-
angels who minister and make pro-
pitiation to the Lord for all the
sins of the righteous ', As the hero
or strong one of God (T33 and PK)
he is naturally set over all the powers
(ver. 9). Pray and intercede . . .
supplicate. These verbs are in the
plural in all MSS. but d. Those
who dwell, &c, : see 37^. 7,
The fourth is Phanuel, who is set over
the repentance and hope of the inheri-
tors of eternal life (ver, 9). He pre.
vents the Satans from appearing before
the Lord of Spirits to accuse men. The
Satans appear here for the first time in
Enoch, 40', They seem to belong to
a, counter kingdom of evil, ruled by
a chief called Satan, 53'. They existed
as evil agencies before the fall of the
Watchers ; for the guilt of the latter
consisted in becoming subject to Satan,
54^, This view harmonizes exactly
with that of Gen. 3* combined with
&'*, These Satans bad the right of
access into heaven, 40' (cf. Job 1'
Zech. 3)—a privilege denied to the
Watchers, 13° 14^. Their functions
were threefold : they tempted to evil,
69^1 " ; they accused the dwellers upon
earth, 40' ; they punished the con-
demned. In this last character they
are technically called ' angels of pun-
ishment', 53=561 62" 631; thig de-
signation has been taken over into the
Interpolations : cf, 66^ (note). The Talmud
(cf. Weber, Jiid. Theol. 251-254)
does not draw this clear line of demar-
cation between the Satans and the fallen
angels, but rather confuses their attri-
butes just as in ch. 69. For the close
