And so judgement shall overtake you, sinners.<br />

3. Fear not <strong>the</strong> sinners, ye righteous<br />

For again will <strong>the</strong> Lord deliver <strong>the</strong>m into your hands,<br />

righteous ones, i. e. <strong>the</strong> righteous<br />

among his children's descendants. This<br />

stanza is imperfect.<br />

XC V. 1. Oh that mine eyes were<br />

[a cloud <strong>of</strong>] waters. ' Cloud ' here<br />

is impossiblej however it may be in <strong>the</strong><br />

next line. Its genesis is, I think,<br />

clear. The text = D^D \yS, ""TV in^"'D.<br />

Here <strong>the</strong> impossible pv is ei<strong>the</strong>r a<br />

dittograph <strong>of</strong> '^''11 : <strong>the</strong>n we should<br />

have ' Oh that mine eyes were waters '<br />

or it is a corruption <strong>of</strong> fV, In that<br />

case we should have ' Oh that mine<br />

eyes were a spring <strong>of</strong> waters '. In<br />

this latter case we might compare 2<br />

Bar. 35" ' Become ye springs, mine<br />

eyes, and ye, mine eyelids, a fount<br />

<strong>of</strong> tears '. Our text, <strong>of</strong> course, is based<br />

on Jer. 9^ ' Oh that my head were<br />

"Who has permitted (lit. ' given ') you<br />

' Who will give you ' or ' Oh that ye<br />

were ' is probably right. Then ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

omitting ' to practise ' with g, or emend-<br />

ing tfegabgrft into tStgabarfl, we should<br />

have ' Oh that ye were become a re-<br />

proach and wickedness '. In that case we<br />

should in <strong>the</strong> next line adopt <strong>the</strong> sub-<br />

junctive with fi and not <strong>the</strong> indicative<br />

in a. The couplet would <strong>the</strong>n run :<br />

' Oh that ye were become a reproach<br />

and an evil<br />

And that so judgement might over-<br />

take you, sinners.'<br />

3. Yet let not <strong>the</strong> righteous fear ; for<br />

<strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir supremacy is at hand<br />

cf. 9112. Again. The writer may<br />

refer to <strong>the</strong> Macoabean victories ; for<br />
