3. And I Enoch was blessing <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> majesty and <strong>the</strong><br />
King <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ages, and lo ! <strong>the</strong> Watchers called me—Enoch <strong>the</strong><br />
scribe—and said to me : 4. 'Enoehj thou scribe <strong>of</strong> righteous-<br />
ness, go, f declaref to <strong>the</strong> Watchers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heaven who have left<br />
<strong>the</strong> high heaven, <strong>the</strong> holy eternal place, and have defiled <strong>the</strong>m-<br />
selves with women, and have done as <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> earth do,<br />
and have taken unto <strong>the</strong>mselves wives : " Ye have wrought<br />
Enoch at this date had already been<br />
translated ; but, if so, this was not <strong>the</strong><br />
meaning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vision he has incor-<br />
porated ; for Enoch is still living : his<br />
final translation from earth has not yet<br />
fallen out ; for as a man he writes <strong>the</strong><br />
petition for <strong>the</strong> angels, 13" : receives<br />
a vision in sleep and is transported in<br />
spirit unto heaven, 14^ : speaks with<br />
a tongue <strong>of</strong> flesh, 14' : and<br />
is tei-rified,<br />
like a mortal man, at <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong><br />
God, 14'*. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> next<br />
verse (12') was .apparently before <strong>the</strong><br />
author <strong>of</strong> Jub. 4", who states that<br />
Enoch spent six jubilees <strong>of</strong> years (i. e.<br />
294) with <strong>the</strong> angels, being instructed<br />
in <strong>the</strong> things <strong>of</strong> heaven and earth, and<br />
that afterwards he was taken from<br />
amongst <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> men. 2.<br />
His activities. Here E reads ' all his<br />
activities ', but kuellft = ' all' is a cor-<br />
ruption <strong>of</strong> 'SM = TO as frequently.<br />
For ' his ' G* corruptly reads ' <strong>the</strong>ir '.<br />
His days. E corruptly prefixes ' in '.<br />
3. This verse, which contains <strong>the</strong><br />
request <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Watchers that Enoch<br />
should intercede for <strong>the</strong>m, should be<br />

The idea <strong>of</strong> a heavenly 'scribe' is<br />
derived in <strong>the</strong> main from <strong>the</strong> Baby-<br />
lonian Nabfl. He is <strong>the</strong> man (in Ezek.<br />
92 sqti.-j gj^jj jj^ linen with writer's ink-<br />
horn by his side. He is accompanied<br />
by six o<strong>the</strong>r men. These go back to<br />
<strong>the</strong> seven gods <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> planets. In later<br />
Jewish writings this <strong>of</strong>fice is fulfilled<br />
by Michael in 1 Enoch 89" »"''•, by<br />
Enoch in 1 Enoch 12' "> 15^ 92^, and<br />
by Vretil, an archangel, in 2 Enoch<br />
