' For whom are these chains being prepared 7' 5. And he said
unto me :
' These are being prepared for the hosts of Azazel; so
that they may take them and east them into the abyss of complete
condemnation^ and they shall cover their jaws with rough stones
as the Lord of Spirits commanded.
6. And Michael, and Gabriel, and Raphael^ and Phanuel shall
take hold of them on that great day, and cast them on that day
into the burning furnace^ that the Lord of Spirits may take
vengeance on them for their unrighteousness in becoming subject
to Satan and leading astray those who dwell on the earth.'

7. And in those days shall punishment come from the Lord of
Spirits, and He will open all the chambers of waters which are
the watchers in ver. 5 is that described
at length in 10-16. 4. Chains.

Abyss. Cf. 10'. The abyss of
complete oondemuation is not
Gehenna but only the preliminary place
of punishment ; cf. 10^ ^^. We are not
told by whom the chains are forged for
the fallen angela, nor yet who are the
agents who execute the first judgement
npon them. Chains are also
made for the kings and the mighty, 53^.
And they shall cover, g reads ' to
cover'. 6. The final judgement
upon the watchers. On that great
day: see 45^ (note). Observe that in
the Parables the guilt of the watchers
originated in their becoming subjects
of Satan : see 40' (note) : Book of
Jubilees, lO^'ii- And^io. > q, ahcch.

2. This digression on the first worldjudgement
is a Noachic fragment. The
Book of Noah is mentioned in the

Book of Jubilees, lO^^ 21". These
fragments, 39i. ^ " 54^-55^ 60 65-69^°,
deal mainly with the Deluge. They
are to be regarded as interpolations on
the following grounds out of many
(1) They always disturb the context in
which they occur. (2) They profess to
be a revelation of Noah, 60'-". 2
