3. Then Raphael answered, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> holy angels who was<br />

with me, and said unto me :<br />

' These hollow places have been<br />

created for this very purpose, that <strong>the</strong> spirits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> souls <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

dead should assemble <strong>the</strong>rein, yea that all <strong>the</strong> souls <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> children<br />

<strong>of</strong> men should assemble here. 4. And <strong>the</strong>se places have been<br />

made to receive <strong>the</strong>m till <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir judgement and till<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir appointed period [till <strong>the</strong> period appointed], till <strong>the</strong> great<br />

judgement (comes) upon <strong>the</strong>m.'<br />

that wronged him, and asks :<br />

' Whose<br />

spirit is this?' Abel stands here for<br />

a class— 22°"'—whose abode in Sheol is<br />

no doubt along with <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

righteous, 28'"- Hence we conclude<br />

that <strong>the</strong>re were originally only three<br />

places in Sheol mentioned in this chapter.<br />

To receive <strong>the</strong>m (G^ ds (Triaivaxaiv<br />

avToiv—<strong>of</strong> which E is a free render-<br />

ing). This seems to be <strong>the</strong> equivalent<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ' promptuaria ' for departed souls<br />

in 4 Ezra 4^" 7'^ which are called<br />

These verses have hi<strong>the</strong>rto been sup-<br />

posed to give a description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> iirst<br />

division <strong>of</strong> Sheol for righteous souls<br />

which in <strong>the</strong>ir life met with persecution<br />

and suflfered a violent and undeserved<br />

death. These cry continually to God<br />

for vengeance on those who wronged<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. In <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author<br />

many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chasidim must have<br />

perished in this way. This idea <strong>of</strong>
