preparing all <strong>the</strong> iastruments <strong>of</strong> Satan. 4. And I asked <strong>the</strong><br />

angel <strong>of</strong> peace who went with me :<br />

' For whom are <strong>the</strong>y preparing<br />

<strong>the</strong>se instruments ?<br />

' 5. And he said unto me :<br />

' They prepare<br />

<strong>the</strong>se for <strong>the</strong> kings and <strong>the</strong> mighty <strong>of</strong> this earth, that <strong>the</strong>y may<br />

<strong>the</strong>reby be destroyed.<br />

6. And after this <strong>the</strong> Righteous and Elect One shall cause <strong>the</strong><br />

house <strong>of</strong> his congregation to appear :<br />

more hindered in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits.<br />

henceforth <strong>the</strong>y shall be no<br />

7. And <strong>the</strong>se mountains shall not stand as <strong>the</strong> earth before his<br />

righteousness^<br />

But <strong>the</strong> hills shall be as a fountain <strong>of</strong> water.<br />

And <strong>the</strong> righteous shall have rest from <strong>the</strong> oppression <strong>of</strong><br />

sinners.^<br />

LIV. 1. And I looked and turned to ano<strong>the</strong>r part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth,<br />

and saw <strong>the</strong>re a deep valley with burning fire. 3. And <strong>the</strong>y<br />

brought <strong>the</strong> kings and <strong>the</strong> mighty, and began to cast <strong>the</strong>m into<br />

this deep valley. 3. And <strong>the</strong>re mine eyes saw how <strong>the</strong>y made<br />

<strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong>ir instruments, iron chains <strong>of</strong> immeasurable weight.<br />

4. And I asked <strong>the</strong> angel <strong>of</strong> peace who went with me, saying<br />

52. The mountaius and <strong>the</strong> hills are<br />

symbols <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world powers as per-<br />

sonated in <strong>the</strong> kings and <strong>the</strong> mighty.<br />

Before <strong>the</strong> Messiah's righteousness, <strong>the</strong><br />

mountains (i. e. <strong>the</strong> kings) will not be<br />

like <strong>the</strong> earth which abideth for ever,<br />

Ps. 781=8 Ecclea. 1* ;<br />

and <strong>the</strong> hills (i. e.<br />

<strong>the</strong> mighty) shall be as a fount <strong>of</strong> water,<br />

Is. 64' ; cf. 52^. The earth's great ones<br />

will become streugthless and vanish at<br />

<strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messiah. His<br />

righteousness (a-g). 5, f'P-n, ' His<br />

face '.<br />

LIV. In 53 <strong>the</strong> writer described <strong>the</strong><br />

scene <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> judgement and <strong>the</strong> fetters<br />

that were being prepared to bind <strong>the</strong><br />

kings on <strong>the</strong>ir condemnation. Here he<br />

speaks <strong>of</strong> Gehenna into which <strong>the</strong> kings<br />

are cast : <strong>the</strong>y are punished in <strong>the</strong> sight<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous ; cf. 621^. The fallen<br />

angels are cast into a I'urnace <strong>of</strong> fire.<br />

The idea <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fallen angels and kings<br />

being judged toge<strong>the</strong>r is to be traced<br />

to Is.<br />

24'i> 22. 1. To ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth. The writer now<br />

turns from <strong>the</strong> valley <strong>of</strong> Jehoshaphat<br />

on <strong>the</strong> north-east <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem to <strong>the</strong><br />

valley <strong>of</strong> Hinnom lying to <strong>the</strong> south <strong>of</strong><br />

it. A deep valley : see 48° (note).<br />
