§ 19. The Influence <strong>of</strong> 1 Enoch on <strong>the</strong> New Testament.<br />

The influence <strong>of</strong> 1 Enoch on <strong>the</strong> New Testament has been<br />

greater than that <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r apocryphal and pseud-<br />

epigrajihal <strong>book</strong>s taken toge<strong>the</strong>r. The evidence for this con-<br />

clusion may for <strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong> convenience be arranged under<br />

two heads. (A) A series <strong>of</strong> passages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New Testament<br />

which ei<strong>the</strong>r in phraseology or idea directly depend on or are<br />

illustrative <strong>of</strong> passages in 1 Enoch. (B) Doctrines in 1 Enoch<br />

which had an undoubted share in moulding <strong>the</strong> corresponding<br />

New Testament doctrines.<br />

(A) We will begin with <strong>the</strong> General Epistles. I quote from<br />
