134 Tlte Booh <strong>of</strong> Enoch Sect. II<br />

<strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> in that place, <strong>the</strong>re was produced a smell <strong>of</strong> sulphur,<br />

and it was connected with those waters, and that valley <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

angels who had led astray (mankind) burned beneath that land.<br />

7. And through its valleys proceed streams <strong>of</strong> fire, where <strong>the</strong>se<br />

angels are punished who had led astray those who dwell upon <strong>the</strong><br />

earth.<br />

8. But those waters shall in those days serve for <strong>the</strong> kings<br />

and <strong>the</strong> mighty and <strong>the</strong> exalted, and those who dwell on <strong>the</strong><br />

earth, for <strong>the</strong> healing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body, but for <strong>the</strong> punishment <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> spirit; now <strong>the</strong>ir spirit is full <strong>of</strong> lust, that <strong>the</strong>y may be<br />

punished in <strong>the</strong>ir body, for <strong>the</strong>y have denied <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits<br />

and see <strong>the</strong>ir punishment daily, and yet believe not in His name.<br />

9. And in proportion as <strong>the</strong> burning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir bodies becomes<br />

severe, a corresponding change shall take place in <strong>the</strong>ir spirit for<br />

ever and ever; for before <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits none shall utter<br />

an idle word. 10. For <strong>the</strong> judgement shall come upon <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

because <strong>the</strong>y believe in <strong>the</strong> lust <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir body and deny <strong>the</strong> Spirit<br />

connected with <strong>the</strong> punishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

angels. Burned beneatt that land.<br />

Not merely <strong>the</strong> immediate neighbour-<br />

hood <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gehenna valley is here desig-<br />

nated, but, as Dillniann points out, <strong>the</strong><br />

adjacent country down to and beyond<br />

<strong>the</strong> Dead Sea. A subterranean fire was<br />

believed to exist under <strong>the</strong> Gehenna<br />

valley; cf. 27^ (notel. 8. Those<br />

waters shall serve . . . for <strong>the</strong><br />

healing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body. The hot springs<br />

resulted from <strong>the</strong> meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> water<br />

and fire underground by which <strong>the</strong><br />

angels were punished. As an instance<br />

<strong>of</strong> such a hot spring Dillmann mentions<br />

Kallirrhoe to <strong>the</strong> east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea,<br />

to which Herod <strong>the</strong> Gre.'it resorted,<br />

Jos. Aid. xvii. 6. 5 ; Bell. Iml. i.33. 5.<br />

It has been objected that according to<br />

<strong>the</strong> latter passage <strong>the</strong>se waters were<br />

sweet and not sulphurous. So far as<br />

this objection is valid, it cannot hold<br />

against <strong>the</strong> hot springs <strong>of</strong> Machaerus,<br />

Mell. IiuJ. vii. 6. 3, which were bitter,<br />

and in <strong>the</strong> neiy:hljourh()od <strong>of</strong> which<br />

<strong>the</strong>re were sulphur mines. Holtzmanii<br />

{Jahrh. f. D. T. xii. 391) refers to <strong>the</strong><br />

eruptions <strong>of</strong> Mount Epomeo in Isohia<br />

in 46 and 35 B.C. (quoted by Schodde),<br />

but, as we have seen above, <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

no need to go to <strong>the</strong> west for an ex-<br />

planation. In those days. Tliose<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> writer. Healing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body<br />

{gm, h.r). qtii, $-li.c read ' healing <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> soul and body '. For <strong>the</strong><br />

punishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spirit, i.e. in <strong>the</strong><br />

final judgement. Punished in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

body. In Gehenna <strong>the</strong>y will suffer in<br />

<strong>the</strong> body as well as in <strong>the</strong> spirit.<br />

Denied <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits : cf. 38^<br />

(note) 54' (note). See <strong>the</strong>ir punishment<br />

daily. The hot springs are a<br />

testimony to <strong>the</strong> present punishment<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> angels : a testimony likewise to<br />

<strong>the</strong> punishment that will befall <strong>the</strong><br />

kings and <strong>the</strong> mighty. 9^ The<br />

punishment will work repentance in<br />

<strong>the</strong> kings, which will be unavailing.<br />

An idle word :<br />

cf. 49* (note).<br />

10. Deny <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord.
