16 The BooJc of Enoch [Sect. I
the days"" of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they
called it Mount Hermon^ because they had sworn and bound
themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. 7. And these
are the names of their leaders : Semiazaz^ their leader^ Arakiba,
Rameelj Kokabielj Tamielj Ramielj Danel^ Ezeqeel, Baraqijal,
Asael^ ArmaroSj Batarel; Ananelj Zaqiel^ Sams^peelj Satarel,
Turelj Jomjaelj Sariel. 8. These are their chiefs of tens.
of Jubilees. In later tradition (Eisen-
menger, Entdeclct. Jud. ii. 387) the
reason that Azazel could not return to
heaven was that he had outstayed
the limit of time assigned to angelic
visitants to earth—seven days. In the
Targ. Jon. on Gen. 6* Shamchazai and
Uziel (i. e. Azazel) are mentioned in
connexion with this myth. 7. This
list is incomplete. A name has been
lost after Tflrel. SeniiazS.z. Deriva-
tion doubtful. Possibly from tVJIttE'
' mighty name ' or ''NinDE'. Hameel.
This is probably corrupt for Arakiel
—
'ApaKii]\ as in G'. Now in G' 8' where
it is speaking of 'Apajci-qK we have u
5k rpiTOs kSlSa^GV rci ffrjficia t^s yjjs.
Thus 'ApoKiTjA. = ^Kip"|{< where pIN
= ' earth ', Thus we see that the duties
of the angel are reflected in his name.
This is frequent in Judaism. Arakiel
is mentioned as unfallen in Sih. Or.
2216-17. Kokabiel = i)Ni3313 = ' star
of God '. TamlSl = iiX''»in = ' the
perfection of God'. Ramlel. See
1 Apoc. Bar. 55', Sib. Or. 2216-".
Dftngl, i. c. Aavu-n\ G' ^N'JI. Eze-
qeel. Since G' 8' writes & Si SySoos
fSiSa^ev afpodKomav, this word comes
from pN''pnE'. pnK' is rendered by
a.Ji(> in 2 Kings 2212 pg. igu (Beer).
Here again the name and functions of
the angel are connected. BaraqJjal
= bii''p-i2 = 'lightning of God'-
Armaros. Tliis is the form in E, but
G' gives iap/japus and G* 'A/Jcapwj.
Since G' 8' writes in reference to this
angel eSiSa^cv . , . iiraoiSas . . , «ai
liraoiSwi/ \vT'i)ptov the word may go back
to "inn = ' an incantation ', ' spell '.
If so ArmarOs or 'Apeapus would be
corruptions of Abaros or something
similar. Ananel = PN^iJ?. Sam-
sapeel. The word should be 'Sham-
shiel'. Since G' &' describes the
functions of this angel as o Se e/SSo/tos
I5i'5af« Til (XTjiieia tov ^\iov the name is
from B'DE', i. c. ijN'iti'CK' ' sun of God '.
On Shamash the sun god see K.A. T.'
367-370. Turel = ^NniC = ' rock
of God '. Jomjael = ^S
