went <strong>of</strong>f and sat down at <strong>the</strong> waters <strong>of</strong> Dan, in <strong>the</strong> land <strong>of</strong> Dan,<br />

to <strong>the</strong> south <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> west <strong>of</strong> Hermon : I read <strong>the</strong>ir petition till<br />

I fell asleep. 8. And behold a dream came to me, and visions<br />

fell down upon me, and I saw visions <strong>of</strong> chastisement, '"and<br />

a voice came bidding (me)"' to tell it to <strong>the</strong> sons <strong>of</strong> heaven, and<br />

reprimand <strong>the</strong>m. 9. And when I awaked, I came unto <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y were all sitting ga<strong>the</strong>red toge<strong>the</strong>r, weeping in ^Abels-<br />

jail, which is between Lebanon and Seneser, with <strong>the</strong>ir faces<br />

covered, 10. And I recounted before <strong>the</strong>m all <strong>the</strong> visions<br />

which I had seen in slgep, and I began to speak <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong><br />

righteousness, and to reprimand <strong>the</strong> heavenly Watchers.<br />

XIV. 1. The <strong>book</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong> righteousness, and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

reprimand <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eternal Watchers in accordance with <strong>the</strong> command<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Great One in that vision. 2. I saw in my<br />

sleep what I will now say with a tongue <strong>of</strong> flesh and with <strong>the</strong><br />

breath <strong>of</strong> my mouth :<br />

which <strong>the</strong> Great One has given to men to<br />

esset homo,<br />

legatione ad angelog fungebatur et<br />

translatus est et oonservatur usque<br />

nunc testis iudicii Dei, quoniam augeli<br />

quidam transgressi deciderunt in terram<br />

in indicium.' 7. 'Waters <strong>of</strong> Dan.<br />

This river is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tributfiries<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan, and is called '<strong>the</strong><br />

little Jordan' in Jos. Ant, v. 3. 1;<br />

viii. 8. 4. This place—from pi 'to<br />

judge '.—is chosen because its name is<br />

eigniiioant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>the</strong> writer<br />

is dealing with, i. e. <strong>the</strong> judgement <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> angels. South <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> west <strong>of</strong><br />

Hermon. G* reads ' south <strong>of</strong> Hermon<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> west'. I read, gmq prefix<br />

9. 'Abelsjall is probably a corruption<br />

<strong>of</strong> 'A/SciXT^r);, a town in <strong>the</strong> Antilibanus,<br />

which could be loosely described as<br />

lying between Lebanon and Senir, i. e.<br />

Hermon. There was a play <strong>of</strong> words<br />

in <strong>the</strong> original. The angels were<br />

mourning (P^DN) in Abilene (p^JiaX).<br />

SenSser, i. e. Senir, a name <strong>of</strong> Hermon<br />

(Deut. 3") or a part <strong>of</strong> it, Cant. 4«.<br />
