And shall understand' all the words of this book,
And recognize that their riches shall not be able to save them

7. Woe to you, sinners, on the day of strong anguish,
Ye who afflict the righteous and burn them with fire
Ye shall be requited according to your works.
8. Woe to you, ye obstinate of heart.
Who watch in order to devise wickedness
Therefore shall fear come upon you
And there shall be none to help you.
9. Woe to you, ye sinners, on account of the words of your
mouth.
And on account of the deeds of your hands which your
godlessness has wrought.
In blazing flames burning worse than fire shall ye burn.

of the wicked is aggravated by seeing
the righteous in security, just as in
4 Ezra /'' (quoted above), while the
same thought reappears in Wisdom

taken as dealing with the children of
the earth. Next 'SmClna is here a ren-
dering of 7r€7roi9c5Ta(s) as in Prov. 10',
which in turn goes back to nD3 (adv.)

sinners, apostates, paganizers, 102'
cf. the Hebrew phrase flXH Dj) : the
righteous are designated as the

' chil-
dren of heaven ', 101^. Shall under-
stand. The sinners shiiU not under-
stand till the judgement has already
come upon them. The same idea is in
Wisdom h^ ="• Biohea shall not
be able to save them ; cf. Zeph. 1''.

latter. On the day of strong an-
guish. The MSS. have wrongly trans-
posed this phrase into the next clause.
I have restored it as suggested in my
edition of 1893. Ye who. The
MSS. read soba ( = ' when ') corrupt
for '611a (i.e. ^fl; corrupt for XAj)-
The text as it stands is very unsatisfactory:
' Woe to you sinners when ye
afflict ... on the day of strong anguish.'
The woe is not felt till the judgement-
day: then they shall be requited accord-
ing to their works ; cf. 45^ (note).
Otherwise they must be taken of the
time of the persecution of the right-
eous. Eeguited according to your
works : cf. 95'. 8. Obstinate
of heart (a). jS ' perverse of heart ' ; cf.
98". Watch: cf. Is. 29. 9.
The wicked will suffer in the flames of
hell for their godless words and deeds.
