my son Methuselah took a wife<br />

for his son Lamech, and she<br />

became pregnant by him and<br />

was white as snow and red as<br />

hair <strong>of</strong> his head f and his long<br />

locks were white as wool, and his<br />

opened his eyes, he lighted up<br />

<strong>the</strong> whole house like <strong>the</strong> sun,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> whole house was very<br />

bright. 3. And <strong>the</strong>reupon<br />

he arose in <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

midwife, opened his mouth, and<br />

t conversed withf <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong><br />

CVI-CVII. We have here again a<br />

fragment <strong>of</strong> a Noah Apocalypse. Part<br />

<strong>of</strong> this section lias been preserved in a<br />

Latin version which I print side by side<br />

with <strong>the</strong> translation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ethiopic.<br />

fulf. It is ra<strong>the</strong>r astonishing' that <strong>the</strong><br />

new-born infant should have ' long<br />

locks '. Since <strong>the</strong>re is no mention <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se in <strong>the</strong> Latin, and since it is<br />

possible that deiudSmahu . . . sanfij<br />

'a'Sjeutihu (= 'his long locks . . . and<br />

(> iSi) li's eyes beautiful ') is corrupt<br />

for 'egarihu ladahSj 'a'gjentihu. If this<br />

is right we should have ' was white . . .<br />

and his eyes were like <strong>the</strong> rays <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

by <strong>the</strong> Ethiopic version in ver. 5<br />

' his eyes are as <strong>the</strong> rays <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sun '<br />

also 'septies' (ver. 10; or 'in septies'<br />

(ver. 2; seems corruptfor ' capitis', which<br />

depends on 'capilli'. See ver. 10 (note).<br />

This phrase recurs in ver.ll. The Latin<br />

is defective here. fConversed withf.<br />

Here ' tanagara = conversed with ' is<br />

corrupt for taganaja = irpoaeicviirjai or<br />

i^ai/jioKoyriaaTO. Hence render' praised'.<br />

Cf. 'laudavit' in <strong>the</strong> Latin. But adora-<br />

vit' occurs <strong>the</strong>re also and=ir/)o(T€KiJi'i)ffc.<br />
