Introduction li<br />

<strong>the</strong> main complete and self-consistent. It has, however; suffered<br />

at <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire work in <strong>the</strong> way <strong>of</strong><br />

direct interpolation and <strong>of</strong> severe dislocations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text. We<br />

have already seen his handiwork in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> 12-16 and 78-82.<br />

The dislocations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text are a remarkable feature in this<br />

Section, and I cannot see any adequate explanation. The editor<br />

incorporated an earlier work—<strong>the</strong> Apocalypse <strong>of</strong> Weeks—into<br />

his text, 931"^'' 9P^~i'', <strong>the</strong> former part dealing with <strong>the</strong> first<br />

seven weeks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world's history and <strong>the</strong> latter with <strong>the</strong> last<br />

three. Taken toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>se form an independent whole. But<br />

this is not all. Since this Section is <strong>of</strong> different authorship from<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Sections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong> it is obvious that it began originally<br />

with 921, < Written by Enoch <strong>the</strong> scribe,' &c. On 92 follows<br />

t)]^i-io, is-19 j^g ^ natural sequel, where Enoch summons his children<br />

to receive his parting words. Then comes <strong>the</strong> Apocalypse <strong>of</strong><br />

Weeks: 93i^" 9112-". r^\^y^^ ^j^g original order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong> is<br />

92 91i-"'"-i'' 931-10 9112-17 94_<br />

Relation to 6-36. At first sight <strong>the</strong> evidence for <strong>the</strong> unity <strong>of</strong><br />

authorship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se two Sections is very great. They have many<br />

phrases in common. In each <strong>the</strong>re are references to <strong>the</strong> law, to<br />

<strong>the</strong> eating <strong>of</strong> blood, and to <strong>the</strong> regularity <strong>of</strong> nature. There is no<br />

hint <strong>of</strong> a Messiah in ei<strong>the</strong>r. There are o<strong>the</strong>r resemblances, but<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are seeming and not real. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, in 6-36 <strong>the</strong><br />

Messianic kingdom is eternal, in 91-104 it is temporary, if <strong>the</strong><br />

Apocalypse <strong>of</strong> Weeks is taken to be a constituent part <strong>of</strong> 91-104.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> former <strong>the</strong> final judgement is held before <strong>the</strong> establish-<br />

ment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kingdom, lOi^ I61, in <strong>the</strong> latter at <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

temporary kingdom (93i-i" 911-1°). Whereas <strong>the</strong> resurrection<br />

in 6-36 is a resuscitation to a temporary blessedness, IQi^ 25'^,<br />

in <strong>the</strong> latter it is not to <strong>the</strong> temporary kingdom spoken <strong>of</strong> in<br />

9113, 14 958^ but to one <strong>of</strong> eternal blessedness subsequent to <strong>the</strong><br />

final judgement, 100*' ^ Whereas <strong>the</strong> resurrection in 6-36 is<br />

a resuscitation in a physical body, in 91-104 it is a resui'rection<br />

in a spiritual body, 923. 4 104^' «. In <strong>the</strong> latter <strong>the</strong>re is a resur-<br />

rection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous only : not so in <strong>the</strong> former. For o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

grounds see p. 219 sq.<br />
