6. And thenceforward none shall seek for themselves mercy
from the Lord of Spirits
For their life is at an end.

elect and holy children f will descend from the high heaven, and

in those days Enoch received books of zeal and wrath, and books

And mercy shall not be accorded to them, saith the Lord of
Spirits.
3. And in those days a whirlwind carried me off from the
earth.
And set me down at the end of the heavens.
4. And there I saw another vision, the dwelling-places of the

reads ' there '. Seek for themselves
(a,co!)i5). Other MSS. 'seek'. The 'for
themselves ' could also be translated
' for them '
; but the dative here is
clearly the Hebrew dativm ethicus.
XXXIX. 1-2". This passage is
obviously an interpolation. It has
nothing to do with its present context
and appears to be a fragment of the
older book of Enoch, such as we find
in chapters 6-36. Here manifestly
3g2b I ^jjji mercy shall not be accorded
to them, saith the Lord of Spirits
should follow immediately on 38^. This
interpolation refei's to the descent of
the Watchers to unite themselves with
the daughters of men.
XXXIX. 1. And it shall oome to
pass. Here and in the rest of this
verse we should have past and not
future tenses. This may be due to the
interpolator who made these changes
in order to ad.apt it to the time of the

adjoining context. Elect and holy
children . . . from the high heaven.
For ' elect and holy ' q reads ' holy and
elect '. For the idea of. 106" ' Some
from the heights of heaven *. For the
epithet ' elect ' cf. 1 Tim. 5"! ' the elect
angels'. Schodde compares Tob. 8^^.
2. Enoch received books of zeal, &c.
As we shall find later, sometimes an
angel dictates to Enoch, at others the
angel himself writes the book and
commits it to Enoch. Zeal and
wrath, g trans. 3. Carried me
off. This seems to be recounted as
a real translation of Enoch, as in 52^ j
cf. 2 Kings 2^1, and not as a mere in-
cident in a dream, as in 14'< K 4.
Dwelling-places. This could be ren-
dered ' dwellings' or ' abiding-places '
see 39'. » 41" 2 Enoch 61^ John 142. The
vision here (39*"'^) set forth is pro-
phetic, but there are many difficulties
in the interpretation which we can
surmount only by bearing in mind that
