three renderings do not presuppose three different forms in <strong>the</strong><br />

Greek. They most probably presuppose merely one, i.e. 6 nios rov<br />

avOpdnrov, but walda b'gsi may presuppose 6 vlh'; rov aj/8pos. But<br />

I thinic <strong>the</strong> latter improbable. In 62= 69^9 {Us) 71i* bS'si may be<br />

a rendering <strong>of</strong> avOpwTrov as in 1^ 15^.<br />

This change <strong>of</strong> rendering may seem surprising, but we have<br />

a perfect parallel in <strong>the</strong> Curetonian and Sinaitic versions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Syriac N. T.i Thus whereas in <strong>the</strong> Peshitto b'reh dg-nasa (ma<br />

NB'3N"i) occurs uniformly as a rendering <strong>of</strong> 6 ulos tov avOpunrov, in <strong>the</strong><br />

Curetonian yersion we have b'reh de-gabra {N1331 iT\l) in Luke 7^*<br />

g26 22''8^ and in <strong>the</strong> Sinaitic version b'reh de-gabra in Mark 8^'<br />

Luke 7^* John IS^^, and elsewhere in both <strong>the</strong>se versions b'reh<br />

de-nasa. In <strong>the</strong> Palestinian Lectionary <strong>the</strong>re is still ano<strong>the</strong>r way <strong>of</strong><br />

rendering <strong>the</strong> phrase, but this does not concern us here. We have,<br />

however, learnt from <strong>the</strong>se versions that differences in <strong>the</strong> manner<br />

<strong>of</strong> rendering <strong>the</strong> title ' Son <strong>of</strong> Man ' in <strong>the</strong>se versions does not imply<br />

any difference in <strong>the</strong> original Greek. Similarly we conclude that <strong>the</strong><br />

three renderings <strong>of</strong> this title in <strong>the</strong> Parables do not presuppose<br />

corresponding variations in <strong>the</strong> Greek, but are due to <strong>the</strong> translator.<br />

If, <strong>the</strong>n, <strong>the</strong>se variations in <strong>the</strong> Parables are due to <strong>the</strong> translator<br />

or translators it follows that <strong>the</strong>se translators were Aramaic-speaking<br />

Jews, since <strong>the</strong> phrases walda b'esi and walda sab'e are respectively<br />

equivalents <strong>of</strong> b'reh de-gabra and b'reh de-nasa.^<br />

On <strong>the</strong> above grounds we conclude that 6 vtos tov avOpunrov stood<br />

in all cases in <strong>the</strong> Greek version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Parables.^ That this Greek<br />

jihrase represents <strong>the</strong> Hebrew DlNH-p, we shall fur<strong>the</strong>r conclude from<br />

<strong>the</strong> evidence given in <strong>the</strong> next section.<br />

(c) Passages which postulate a Hebrew original<br />
