Now a reads qarSba = ^yyiwe = 31.^, which in Mishnaic Hebrew =<br />

' has been <strong>of</strong>fered '. This meaning is not found in <strong>the</strong> qal <strong>of</strong> this<br />

verb in Aramaic.<br />

52'. 'All <strong>the</strong>se things, shall be [denied andj destroyed from <strong>the</strong><br />

surface <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth.' Here <strong>the</strong>re were two alternative Greek render-<br />

ngs <strong>of</strong> lini^ One was originally in <strong>the</strong> text, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong><br />

argin, but subsequently both were incorporated into <strong>the</strong> text. Or<br />

<strong>the</strong> dittograph was native to <strong>the</strong> Hebrew, i. e. Wtiy and iTna*.<br />

Schmidt attempts to explain <strong>the</strong> corruption from an Aramaic basis<br />

by assuming that pSDiD'' stood in <strong>the</strong> original, and that this<br />

received <strong>the</strong> two renderings in <strong>the</strong> text. But xai does not mean<br />

' to destroy '. IMoreover, <strong>the</strong> Ethiopia word kShSda here, which<br />

means 'to deny', occurs again in 45^ 46'' 48^", in which three<br />

passages Schmidt says it goes back to <strong>the</strong> Aramaic "|33. Thus his<br />

proposal is satisfactory in no respect.<br />

60^. I have followed u in <strong>the</strong> text, but <strong>the</strong> parallelism is in favour<br />

<strong>of</strong> regarding <strong>the</strong> text as corrupt in <strong>the</strong> word ' worship '. This word<br />

is wholly unsatisfactory. It = linriB'i, which may be corrupt (or<br />

innB'2 ' = ' pervert ' or corrupt '). Thus we recover an excellent<br />

parallelism :<br />

' For those who corrupt <strong>the</strong> righteous law,<br />

And for those who deny <strong>the</strong> righteous judgement,<br />

And for those who take His name in vain.'<br />

ggioa_ ' Their judgement has been determined upon and shall not<br />

be withheld by me for ever.'<br />

For ' withheld ' <strong>the</strong> text reads Aoyio-^T/creTat or dpi^ynr^^i^crcTat. The<br />

Ethiopia word can mean ei<strong>the</strong>r. The former rendering (as in 52^''^<br />

is generally followed here. It is, however, unsatisfactory. The true<br />

reading, as I pointed out in my text, can be recovered by retransla-<br />

tion into Hebrew, oi XoyicrO-^creTai = aSJTl^ nb, corrupt for ^b'n''. NP<br />

'. Here Schmidt follows <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r i)ossible<br />

meaning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ethiopia word apiOfi-qO-qa-erai = NJDJT'— a corruption <strong>of</strong><br />
