As straw in <strong>the</strong> fire so shall <strong>the</strong>y burn before <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> holy<br />

;<br />

As lead in <strong>the</strong> water shall <strong>the</strong>y sink before <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

righteous,<br />

And no trace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m shall any more be found.<br />

10. And on <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir affliction <strong>the</strong>re shall be rest on <strong>the</strong><br />

earth,<br />

And before <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>y shall fall and not rise again<br />

And <strong>the</strong>re shall be no one to take <strong>the</strong>m with his hands and<br />

raise <strong>the</strong>m<br />

For <strong>the</strong>y have denied <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits and His Anointed.<br />

spectacle to <strong>the</strong> righteous. Cf. 4 Ezra<br />

'7^ 'Apparebit lacus tormenti, et contra<br />

iocunditatis paradisus '. But in <strong>the</strong><br />

Parables, where heaven and earth are<br />

transformed on <strong>the</strong> advent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

The Lord . , . and His Anointed :<br />

cf. Ps. 2K The term 'Messiah* or<br />

' Anointed One ' was applicable to any<br />

one specially commissioned by God to<br />

.<br />

a religious or Theocratic function ;<br />

hence to David and his successors, and<br />

even to a Gentile prince—Cyrus (Is.<br />

45^) ; to <strong>the</strong> Jewish high-priest—' <strong>the</strong><br />

anointed priest', Lev. 4'> ^> ^^ &''' ; to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Servant <strong>of</strong> Jehovah, Is. 61^. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> Psalms <strong>the</strong> title generally refers to<br />

<strong>the</strong> reigning Icing or to <strong>the</strong> Davidio<br />

king as such, yet its ideal aspect is<br />

never lost sight <strong>of</strong>. When <strong>the</strong> histori-<br />

cal kingship came to an end, <strong>the</strong> idea<br />

still remained, and was kept prominent<br />

through <strong>the</strong> liturgical use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Psalms.<br />

Its imperfect realization in <strong>the</strong> kings<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past made Israel look forward to<br />

<strong>the</strong> true Messianic king in whom it<br />

should be perfectly embodied. But<br />

<strong>the</strong> term is never used technically in<br />

this sense in <strong>the</strong> 0. T. In this techni-<br />

cal sense it is first found in <strong>the</strong> Parables,<br />
