Book <strong>of</strong> Enoch. The above conclusions<br />

a.ppear tenable, although in Gen. 2' <strong>the</strong><br />

Garden <strong>of</strong> Eden is said to be in <strong>the</strong><br />

East, while in 3'* it is imijlied that it<br />

lies in <strong>the</strong> West, and in l^"-^* in <strong>the</strong><br />

North. See Gimkel, Genesis^ 26.<br />

These variations in Genesis are due<br />

wrongly takes it as governing <strong>the</strong> following<br />

words in <strong>the</strong> genitive. Growing<br />

(E = tpvo/ifva), G^ reads Svm jxiv, but<br />

this reading is certainly corrupt. If<br />

ivai fiiv were original, <strong>the</strong>n to iivbpov<br />

T^s fcuij? would have to be inserted be-<br />

fore Kal Tti Sivdpov TTJs (ppov-qa^m. But<br />

<strong>the</strong> tree <strong>of</strong> life, according to 21^-25, is<br />

in <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bear on onr text ; but may be derived<br />

ultimately from 2 Enoch, and in part<br />

from Gen. 3. Tliese passages are<br />

' Sanctns et Benedictus sustulit eum<br />

(Enochum) ex mundo, ut ipsi serviret<br />

qua Deus eum sustulit, ostendebat ei<br />

omnia repositoria suprema, ostendebat<br />

ei arborem vitae medio in Jiorto, folia<br />

eius atque ramos.' Again (vol. ii,<br />

Parasha H^CD, p. 55") :<br />

' In Enochi<br />

libro uarratur, Sanctum et Benedictum,<br />

cum ascendere eum iusseritet omnia ei<br />

superiorum et inferiorum regnorum re-<br />

positoria ostenderit monstrasse quoque<br />

ariorem vitae et arborem de qua<br />

Adamus praeceptum recepit.' These<br />

passages refer to 2 Enoch. The italicized<br />

words omnia repositoria suprema refer<br />

to Paradise and Hell, which are described
