righteous dwellj where my grandfa<strong>the</strong>r was taken up, <strong>the</strong> seventh<br />

from Adam, <strong>the</strong> first man whom <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits created.<br />

9. And I besought <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r angel that he should show me <strong>the</strong><br />

might <strong>of</strong> those monsters, how <strong>the</strong>y were parted on one day and<br />

east, <strong>the</strong> one into <strong>the</strong> abysses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r unto<br />

<strong>the</strong> dry land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wilderness. 10. And he said to me<br />

' Thou son <strong>of</strong> man, herein thou dost seek to know what is<br />

hidden.'<br />

11. And <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r angel who went with me and showed me<br />

what was hidden told me, what is first and last in <strong>the</strong> heaven<br />

in <strong>the</strong> height, and beneath <strong>the</strong> earth in <strong>the</strong> depth, and at <strong>the</strong><br />

ends <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heaven, and on <strong>the</strong> foundation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heaven.<br />

12. And <strong>the</strong> chambers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> winds, and how <strong>the</strong> winds are<br />

This passage and <strong>the</strong> LXX are <strong>the</strong><br />

oldest testimonies for <strong>the</strong> translation <strong>of</strong><br />

Enoch unto Paradise : later this idea<br />

made its way into <strong>the</strong> Latin version <strong>of</strong><br />

Sir. iJ"" and <strong>the</strong> Ethiopio version <strong>of</strong><br />

Gen. S'* : eight o<strong>the</strong>rs shared this<br />

honour with Enoch according to <strong>the</strong><br />

Talmud, Weber, 251. Seventhfrom<br />

Adam: <strong>of</strong>. 93^ Jude 14 Book <strong>of</strong><br />

Jubilees 7'"'. 7-9, 24. i Ezra 6"-52<br />

and 2 Bar. 29* appear to have drawn<br />

on our text. The following citation<br />

with references tends to prove this.<br />

i Ezra 6" ' Et tunc fconservasti ( = fl'lSi<br />

2 Bar. 29* 'And Behemoth shall be<br />

left '. 9. The ('that ' q, fi-n) o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

augel :<br />

see vv. i, 11. 10. Thou<br />

son <strong>of</strong> man. This use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> phrase<br />

is after <strong>the</strong> manner <strong>of</strong> Ezekiel, and<br />

stands in strong contrast with <strong>the</strong><br />

main conception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Son <strong>of</strong> Man<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Parables, 46^"^ (notes). 11.<br />

We should expect <strong>the</strong> answer to <strong>the</strong><br />

question in ver. 9 to follow here, but it<br />

is not given till ver. 24, and a, long<br />

account (11-23) dealmg with physical<br />

secrets intervenes. In eO'^* it is <strong>the</strong><br />

angel <strong>of</strong> peace who gives <strong>the</strong> answer.<br />

The o<strong>the</strong>r angel who went with<br />
