stretch out <strong>the</strong> vaults <strong>of</strong> heaven"", and have <strong>the</strong>ir station between<br />

heaven and earth : ""<strong>the</strong>se are <strong>the</strong> pillars <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heaven""- 4. I<br />

saw <strong>the</strong> winds <strong>of</strong> heaven which turn and bring <strong>the</strong> circumference<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sun and all <strong>the</strong> stars to <strong>the</strong>ir setting. 5. I saw <strong>the</strong><br />

winds on <strong>the</strong> earth carrying <strong>the</strong> clouds : I saw ""<strong>the</strong> paths <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> angels : I saw"" at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth <strong>the</strong> firmament <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

heaven above. 6. And I proceeded and saw a place which<br />

burns day and night, where <strong>the</strong>re are seven mountains <strong>of</strong><br />

magnificent stones, three towards <strong>the</strong> east, and three towards<br />

<strong>the</strong> south. 7. And as for those towards <strong>the</strong> east (one) was <strong>of</strong><br />

p. 46 (n. 6) proposes to read t^s 7^s<br />

instead <strong>of</strong> rijv yfiv, and to omit «oi.<br />

Hence ' <strong>the</strong> four winds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth<br />

bearing <strong>the</strong> firmament'. But <strong>the</strong> t^s<br />

7^1 or T^j' yqv seems wholly wrong<br />

here. It could have arisen in <strong>the</strong> Ara-<br />

maic through a dittograph. Thusl5o^'7•ol>s<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth <strong>the</strong> firmament, &c.<br />

The ends <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> firmament <strong>of</strong> heaven<br />

rest on <strong>the</strong> ends <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth ; cf. 33^<br />

<strong>the</strong> vault <strong>of</strong> heaven is supported by <strong>the</strong><br />

winds, IS''" '. 6-9. This is ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

version <strong>of</strong> what is recounted in 24i"*.<br />

6. And saw a place G^ ;<br />

TOTTov for which E corruptly reads iU tov<br />

voTov. The seven mountains are in <strong>the</strong><br />

NW. Cf. 77s-' 70=1. Indeed <strong>the</strong> closing<br />

words <strong>of</strong> this verse imply that <strong>the</strong>se<br />

mountains are in <strong>the</strong> NW.—three ex-<br />

tending towards <strong>the</strong> south and three<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> east from <strong>the</strong> NW. corner<br />

where <strong>the</strong> seventh stands. Seven<br />

mountains. These mountains, as I have<br />

shown in <strong>the</strong> note preceding, are in<br />

<strong>the</strong> NW. They and <strong>the</strong> Garden lie in<br />

<strong>the</strong> same quarter, <strong>the</strong> Garden to <strong>the</strong> east<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seven mountains, 321"^ : according<br />

to 70' <strong>the</strong> Garden lies in <strong>the</strong> NW.,<br />

and so appai'ently in 77'. These<br />

mountains are bounded by flaming<br />

mountain ridges 24^ (18°). In 241-' <strong>the</strong><br />

seven mountains are as here in <strong>the</strong><br />

N W., while <strong>the</strong> verses that follow 24* "i-<br />

refer in some way to <strong>the</strong> Garden ; for<br />

<strong>the</strong>y speak <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tree <strong>of</strong> life. Again,<br />

it is worth observing that in 77' <strong>the</strong><br />

seas <strong>of</strong> waters are said to adjoin <strong>the</strong><br />

Garden. The same idea underlies<br />
