The first Parable.
"When the congregation of the righteous shall appear^
And sinners shall be judged for their sins,
And shall be driven from the face of the earth :
2. And when the Righteous One shall appear before the ej-es
of the righteous,
Whose elect works hang upon the Lord of Spirits,

occurred in 1'. It is used pretty much
in the same sense here as in Num. 32''^'
Job 27^, and meana merely an elaborate
discourse, whether in the form of a vision,
prophecy, or poem. His object is gene-
rally paienetic. Those that dwell
on the earth. This phrase (except in
46' and 70', where it is merely geo-
graphical) is used in a good ethical
Hense in the genuine portions of this
section. Cf. 37M0«. ' 48^ SoRev,14«.
But in the Interpolations it calls up
different associations : these are bad in
54» 551 60^ 658. 12 661 gya^ 3^3 either
doubtful or merely geographical in
43* 53» 54" 552 67' 69^. We shoidd
observe that this phrase has an evil
significance in Revelation, except in

XXXVIII. The time of requital
is coming. When the kingdom of the
righteous appears, and the light of
the Lord of Spirits shines on the face
of the righteous and elect, where will
be the future habitation of the sinners
and the godless ? 1. Congregation
of the righteous. This jihrase, which
is peculiar to the Parables, is explained
by a, comparison of 38' 53* 62'. Its
equivalent occurs in Ps. 149' ' congre-

2. The Bighteous One (sadSq m/3).
a-m read sedSq ' righteousness'. Though
less well attested the former is pre-
ferable. Almost the same connexion
of thought is found in 53'. The Mes-
siah is variously named ;
