The first Parable.<br />

"When <strong>the</strong> congregation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous shall appear^<br />

And sinners shall be judged for <strong>the</strong>ir sins,<br />

And shall be driven from <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth :<br />

2. And when <strong>the</strong> Righteous One shall appear before <strong>the</strong> ej-es<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous,<br />

Whose elect works hang upon <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits,<br />

occurred in 1'. It is used pretty much<br />

in <strong>the</strong> same sense here as in Num. 32''^'<br />

Job 27^, and meana merely an elaborate<br />

discourse, whe<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> a vision,<br />

prophecy, or poem. His object is gene-<br />

rally paienetic. Those that dwell<br />

on <strong>the</strong> earth. This phrase (except in<br />

46' and 70', where it is merely geo-<br />

graphical) is used in a good ethical<br />

Hense in <strong>the</strong> genuine portions <strong>of</strong> this<br />

But in <strong>the</strong> Interpolations it calls up<br />

different associations : <strong>the</strong>se are bad in<br />

XXXVIII. The time <strong>of</strong> requital<br />

is coming. When <strong>the</strong> kingdom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

righteous appears, and <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits shines on <strong>the</strong> face<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous and elect, where will<br />

be <strong>the</strong> future habitation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sinners<br />

and <strong>the</strong> godless ? 1. Congregation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous. This jihrase, which<br />

is peculiar to <strong>the</strong> Parables, is explained<br />

by a, comparison <strong>of</strong> 38' 53* 62'. Its<br />

equivalent occurs in Ps. 149' ' congre-<br />

gation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> saints ' D'TDH<br />

less well attested <strong>the</strong> former is pre-<br />

ferable. Almost <strong>the</strong> same connexion<br />

<strong>of</strong> thought is found in 53'. The Mes-<br />

siah is variously named ;<br />

eous and Elect One,' 53« ;<br />
