the phrase is clearly from Is. BS"

may be corrupt for Swaere. But if
we compare Is. 65'^, on which this
line was modelled, it is probable that
instead of Ufin (= Sdiaire) there stood
originally in the text IPIiiri (= Kara-
Kii.\p(T(), as in Is. Tor in tlie preced-
ing verse it is said that their life would
prematurely come to an end, and so
here it is added that they would leave
as a kind of inheritance their name to
be used in formulas of cursing, i. e. as
an example of one cursed. This is the
meaning of the next two difficult lines,
where G^ is to be followed. And by
you shall ^aXO who curse, curse.

sinners curse '. G^ is clearly right and
reflects a Hebrew idiom. All who curse
Mall introduce the names of these sin-
ners into their formulas of cursing as
instances of persons wholly accursed.

shall imprecate by you. So G^ since
E is coiTupt. Here again we have the
same idiom as in the preceding line.

the . . . shall rejoice. The MS. reads
01 afiaprot. What does this corrupt
form stand for? It may be corrupt for
oi {av)afiap(TT])Toi , a bad rendering of
Cl''Xt2nnDn = 'those cleansed 'or 'puri-
fied '. The piel and hithpael of NJiH in
this sense means purification from cere-
monial and ritual uncleanness in the O.T.
M'hereas the context requires spiritual
cleansing. Forgiveness of sins.
This forgiveness will fit them for the
sinless life spoken of in v. 9. But for
the Watchers there is no forgiveness 12'.
