ished in a, place by himself. In his<br />

case as in that <strong>of</strong> his followers <strong>the</strong><br />

place <strong>of</strong> punishment is in <strong>the</strong> valleys<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth hi ilte Nuah sections <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong>, but in <strong>the</strong> genuine Enoch<br />

beyond <strong>the</strong> earth. Azazel as <strong>the</strong><br />

chief <strong>of</strong>fender and leader is first pun-<br />

ished. The preliminary punishment <strong>of</strong><br />

Azazel is described in vv. 4, 5 : <strong>the</strong><br />

final one in ver. 6. Azazel was con-<br />

ceived as chained in <strong>the</strong> wilderness<br />

into which <strong>the</strong> scapegoat was led. The<br />

Jerusalem Targum (Ps. Jonathan) on<br />

Leviticus says that <strong>the</strong> goat was sent<br />

to die in a hard and rough place in <strong>the</strong><br />

wilderness <strong>of</strong> jagged rocks, i.e. Beth<br />

Chaduda. The passage in Ps. Jon.<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mishna (Joma 6*) we find this<br />

word written inn n 'Chadftde'. This<br />

Beth Chaduda was three miles (Joma<br />

C8), or according to ano<strong>the</strong>r account,<br />

twelve miles from Jerusalem. This is<br />

clearly <strong>the</strong> Dudael mentioned in this<br />
