2. And he shall choose <strong>the</strong> righteous and holy from among <strong>the</strong>m :<br />

For <strong>the</strong> day has drawn nigh that <strong>the</strong>y should be saved.<br />

3. And <strong>the</strong> Elect One shall in those days sit on My throne,<br />

And his mouth shall pour forth all <strong>the</strong> secrets <strong>of</strong> wisdom<br />

and counsel<br />

For <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits hath given (<strong>the</strong>m) to him and hath<br />

glorified him.<br />

4. And in those days shall <strong>the</strong> mountains leap like rams,<br />

And <strong>the</strong> hills also shall skip like lambs satisfied with milk,<br />

And <strong>the</strong> faces <strong>of</strong> [all] <strong>the</strong> angels in heaven shall be lighted<br />

up with joy.<br />

seems to underlie <strong>the</strong> separate mention<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two places. They are seemingly<br />

distinguished even in Job 26° (28^^^).<br />

2-5. These verses seem to be disar-<br />

ranged. The judge is simply mentioned<br />

as 'he ' in ver. 2, and is not particular-<br />

ized as ' <strong>the</strong> Elect One ' sitting on God's<br />

throne till ver. 3. Hence it would<br />

seem at first sight that we should<br />

transpose ver. 3 before ver. 2. But<br />

<strong>the</strong>re appears to be a better solution<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> difiiculty. ver. 2 has only two<br />

lines and ver. 5 four. This fact suggests<br />

that <strong>the</strong> missing line <strong>of</strong> ver. 2 is to be<br />

found in ver. 6. This idea gains confirmation<br />

when we observe that when<br />

5" is restored before ver. 2, <strong>the</strong> first<br />

line <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first four stanzas<br />

begins with <strong>the</strong> phrase ' in those days ',<br />

and <strong>the</strong> removal <strong>of</strong> 5" brings ver. i<br />

and 5'"^'^ into a harmony <strong>of</strong> form and<br />

subject. Chapter 51, <strong>the</strong>n, is found to<br />

consist <strong>of</strong> five stanzas <strong>of</strong> three lines<br />

each. 5'. Shall arise, i. e. come<br />

forward, appear. 2. Tlie day has<br />

drawn nigh, &c. Cf. Luke 21^^.<br />

3. The Messiah is <strong>the</strong> embodiment <strong>of</strong><br />

wisdom, 49', and in this wisdom shall<br />

<strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> his kingdom share, 48^<br />

4. The mountains leap, &c., i.e.<br />

with joy; cf. Ps. 114*> ^ And <strong>the</strong><br />

faces <strong>of</strong> [all] <strong>the</strong> angels . . . shall<br />

be lighted up with joy. There are<br />

two ways <strong>of</strong> taking <strong>the</strong> original text<br />

which is preserved in gqtu, <strong>the</strong> oldest<br />

MSS. mala'Skt = 'angels' can ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

be taken as <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> verb ac-<br />

cording to gtti and gas&mfl as an<br />

accusative <strong>of</strong> limitation :<br />

' [all] <strong>the</strong><br />

angels shall be lighted up as to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

faces with joy,' or better ' angels ' can<br />

be taken as a nominativus pendens<br />

resumed in <strong>the</strong> sufiix in gas6mfl. Hence<br />

' <strong>the</strong> faces <strong>of</strong> [all] <strong>the</strong> angels shall ', &c.<br />

The text <strong>of</strong> m also would admit <strong>of</strong> this<br />

rendering. The text <strong>of</strong> 2 is different but<br />

gives <strong>the</strong> same sense. It reads lakuSUd
