66 The Booh <strong>of</strong> Enoch [Sect, ii<br />

rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong>, <strong>the</strong>re is no occasion for treating exhaustively<br />

<strong>the</strong> grounds for this conclusion. Accordingly, we shall give here<br />

only a few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chief characteristics which differentiate this<br />

Section from all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Sections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong>, (a) ITames <strong>of</strong> God<br />

found only in 37-71. ' Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits ' (passim) ;<br />

' Head <strong>of</strong><br />

Days' (462); 'Lord <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mighty' (63^); 'Lord <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rich' (63*);<br />

•Lord <strong>of</strong> wisdom' (63^). (6) Angelology. The four chief angels<br />

in 37-71 are Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, and Phanuel. Phanuel is not<br />

mentioned elsewhere in <strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong>, which gives Uriel instead. In<br />

14" God is surrounded by Cherubim; but in 61^" 71^ by Cherubim,<br />

Seraphim, and Ophannim, angels <strong>of</strong> power, and angels <strong>of</strong> principalities.<br />

The angel <strong>of</strong> peace (40^) is also peculiar to <strong>the</strong> Parables, (c)<br />

Demonology. In <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Sections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong> <strong>the</strong> sins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

angels consisted in <strong>the</strong>ir lusting after <strong>the</strong> daughters <strong>of</strong> men (6-8),<br />

but in 54^ in <strong>the</strong>ir becoming subjects <strong>of</strong> Satan. In 37-71 an evil<br />

spii'it-world is presupposed from <strong>the</strong> beginning, but not in <strong>the</strong> rest<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong>. Satan and <strong>the</strong> Satans, 40^ 53^ 54^, are not even<br />

mentioned in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Sections. These have access to heaven, 40^,<br />

whereas in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Sections only good angels have access <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

The angels <strong>of</strong> punishment also are found for <strong>the</strong> first time in 37-71.<br />

(d) The Messianic doctrine in 37-71 is unique, not only as<br />

regards <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Sections <strong>of</strong> Enoch, but also in Jewish literature<br />

as a whole. The Messiah pre-exists, 48^ (note), from <strong>the</strong> beginning ;<br />

he sits on <strong>the</strong> throne <strong>of</strong> God, 51^, and possesses universal dominion,<br />

62^; all judgement is committed unto him, 69^^, and he slays <strong>the</strong><br />

wicked by <strong>the</strong> word <strong>of</strong> his mouth, 62^. Turning to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Sections we find that <strong>the</strong>re is no Messiah in 1-36 and in 91-104,<br />

while in 83-90 <strong>the</strong> Messiah is evidently human and possesses none<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great attributes belonging to <strong>the</strong> Messiah <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Parables.<br />

(e) The scene <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messianic kingdom in 1-36 is Jerusalem<br />

and <strong>the</strong> earth purified from sin; in 83-90, a heavenly Jerusalem<br />

set up by God Himself; in 91-104, Jerusalem and <strong>the</strong> earth as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are ; but in 37-70, a new heaven and a new earth, 45*- ^ (note).<br />

Again, <strong>the</strong> duration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messianic kingdom in 1-36 is<br />

eternal, but <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> its members limited. The duration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Messianic kingdom in 83-90 is eternal, and <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> its members<br />

eternal (?). The duration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messianic kingdom in 91-104 is<br />

limited, and <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> its members limited. (In 91-104 <strong>the</strong> real<br />

interest centres, not in <strong>the</strong> Messianic kingdom, but in <strong>the</strong> future<br />

spiritual life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous.) But <strong>the</strong> duration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messianic<br />

kingdom in 37-71 is eternal, and <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> its members eternal.
