XX. Of the seven archangels given
' scriptum
in this chapter, only four— Uriel,
Eaphael, Eaguel, and Michael—are
mentioned as acting in 21-36. In
the original probably all were men-
tioned. Of. 81^ 1. This verse is
defective in G* ' ^. The latter omits it,
while the former reads simply 'angels
of the powers
'. But part of the verse
is preserved in ver. 8 in both, i. e.
bvbjiara f apxayy^Kav. Who 'watoh :
see 12'' (note). 2. The province as-
signed to Uriel serves to explain such
passages as 19 21^. » 27^ ZZ^> *. Cf. his
rdle as overseer of the world in 72 sqq.
4 Ezra ii. Tartarus (G si. 2;. E =
Tpojxov corrupt. 3. Baphael : see
10*' '. The definition here given is
vague, but suits admirably in 22^> ''.
In 32^, however, Raphael discharges
duties which according to 20' should
belong to Gabriel. 4. Kaguel.
There seems to be no connexion be-
tween the name of the angel and the
duty assigned to him. Cf. 23*. fTakes
vengeance onf. See note on 23*.
Of the luminaries (G" '. 2). E ' and
on the luminaries '. 5. Michael is the
guardian angel of Israel : so in Dan.
10^'> ^^ 12^, and likewise universally : see
Weber, Jild. Theol. 170 ; according to
this verse Michael is the right speaker
in 24-27, where he instructs Enoch on
the blessings that are to befall the
