bind <strong>the</strong>m for ever. 12. And<br />

such a division has been made<br />

for <strong>the</strong> spirits <strong>of</strong> those who<br />

make <strong>the</strong>ir suit, who make<br />

disclosures concerning <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

destruction, when <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

slain in <strong>the</strong> days <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sin-<br />

ners. 13. Such has been<br />

made for <strong>the</strong> spirits <strong>of</strong> men<br />

who were not righteous but<br />

sinners, who were complete in<br />

transgression, and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trans-<br />

gressors <strong>the</strong>y shall be com-<br />

panions :<br />

but <strong>the</strong>ir spirits shall<br />

not be slain in <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong><br />

judgement nor shall <strong>the</strong>y be<br />

raised from <strong>the</strong>nce.' 14. Then<br />

to be talicn passively as in Wi.sd. 12^^<br />

2 Kings 9'* Matt. 25". So that<br />

(<strong>the</strong>re may be) retribution = iV clvt-<br />

aiToS<strong>of</strong>fis. Emended by Eadermacher.<br />

12-13. The third division is for sinners<br />

who suffered in this life, and <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

incur a less penalty in Sheol. For<br />

<strong>the</strong>m Sheol is an eveilasting place <strong>of</strong><br />

punishment, since <strong>the</strong>y are not raised<br />

from it to be delivered over to a severer<br />

condemnation at <strong>the</strong> final judgement.<br />

12. These sinners demand vengeance<br />

on tho.se that did violence to <strong>the</strong>ra in<br />

life, just as <strong>the</strong> righteous in <strong>the</strong> first<br />

division demanded justice against those<br />

that had destroyed <strong>the</strong>m. 13.<br />

Companions. So also E —kamahdmd.<br />

for ever, so that (<strong>the</strong>re may<br />

be) retribution for <strong>the</strong>ir spirits.<br />

14. Then I blessed <strong>the</strong> Lord<br />

<strong>of</strong> Glorv and said : ' Blessed<br />

Their spirits. + ' because those who<br />

suffer afiiiction here are punished less ',<br />

rection here implied is <strong>of</strong> Israel only :<br />

so <strong>the</strong> entire Section 1-36 would lead us<br />

to infer. O<strong>the</strong>rwise this declaration <strong>of</strong><br />

a General Kesurrection is solitary and<br />

unique in pre-Christian Jewish Apo-<br />

crypha. 14. After each fresh re-<br />

velation Enoch generally bursts forth<br />

into a doxology. Cf. 25' 27' 36* 399-"<br />

4810 81' 8311 84 90". These do-xologies<br />

have, as a rule, a close connexion in
