Bclieve me, Demea; your friend Philo, from thè beginning, has been
amusing himself at both our expence; and it must be confessed, that
thè injudicious reasoning of our vulgar theology has given him but
too just a handle of ridicule. The total infirmity of human reason,
thè absolute incomprehensibility of thè divine nature, thè great and
universal misery and stili greater wickedness of men; these are
s frange topics surely to be so fondly cherished by orthodox divines

La descrizione fatta da Cleante di quella « vulgar theology » che,
difesa da Demea, avrebbe offerto il fianco alle ironie di Filone, sembra
adattarsi anche a descrivere il quadro della teologia scozzese a cavallo
fra il '600 e il '700, quando, per citare le parole di Filone,
it was a most popular theological topic to maintain, that human life
was vanity and misery, and to exaggerate ali thè ills and pains which
