Mentre tutti si occupano della vita, sottolinea Halyburton, solo
la religione si occupa della morte. Essa ha infatti lo scopo primario di
consolare, con la visione dei premi futuri, l'uomo dal terrore della mor­
te. Perciò il compito che si prefigge Halyburton è quello di dimostrare
« thè Insufficiency of Naturai Religion to answer thè Ends of Religion,
by thè Consideration of its Insufficiency to support under thè Troubles
of Life or amongst thè Terrors of Death » 18 . Solo per mezzo della reli­
gione, e della religione rivelata, è possibile individuare, nella nozione
