not bel<strong>on</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> university sector proper as <strong>the</strong>y do not offer doctoral programmes, but <strong>the</strong>y award degrees both at Bachelor<br />

and Master levels. This gives <strong>the</strong>m a<br />

status between <strong>the</strong> university and <strong>the</strong> college sector.<br />

The college sector<br />

As well as <strong>the</strong> universities, over 100 colleges across <strong>the</strong> country offer higher educati<strong>on</strong> courses. Most are ra<strong>the</strong>r small,<br />

specialised <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s (400 to 600 students) offer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e or a few study programmes <strong>in</strong> a particular professi<strong>on</strong>al field.<br />

Some of <strong>the</strong>se courses qualify students at <strong>the</strong> same level as <strong>the</strong> Bachelor’s or comparable degrees, for example those offered<br />

by eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g colleges, colleges of educati<strong>on</strong> and regi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess schools. In o<strong>the</strong>r countries some of <strong>the</strong>se courses are offered by <strong>the</strong> universities, but <strong>in</strong> Denmark <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>ally been offered by <strong>the</strong> specialised colleges. Some of <strong>the</strong> courses <strong>in</strong>clude practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Most teachers at <strong>the</strong>se colleges have academic degrees. The teachers have no obligati<strong>on</strong> to carry out research as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

university sector. However, very often <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s are engaged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical and practical developmental work, and<br />

many of <strong>the</strong>m participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al cooperati<strong>on</strong>, for example, through <strong>the</strong> EC mobility programmes.<br />

The general admissi<strong>on</strong> requirements to <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s are normally <strong>the</strong> same as for <strong>the</strong> universities, i.e. <strong>the</strong> Danish<br />

studentereksamen (upper sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate) or an equivalent nati<strong>on</strong>al or foreign qualificati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The college sector is ma<strong>in</strong>ly State-f<strong>in</strong>anced.<br />
