The special qualificati<strong>on</strong> for schools of art and music is acquired by <strong>the</strong> applicant if he or she passes <strong>the</strong> entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong><br />

and meets any possible fur<strong>the</strong>r special admissi<strong>on</strong> requirements.<br />

In pr<strong>in</strong>ciple, <strong>the</strong> admissi<strong>on</strong> to Fachhochschul studies is granted <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of <strong>the</strong> general university qualificati<strong>on</strong>, which<br />

means that an additi<strong>on</strong>al special qualificati<strong>on</strong> is not required. Additi<strong>on</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s may be prescribed, if necessary, for <strong>the</strong><br />

courses of study chosen by pers<strong>on</strong>s who apply for admissi<strong>on</strong> not <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of a sec<strong>on</strong>dary school leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate but <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> basis of relevant professi<strong>on</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s. If <strong>the</strong> number of applicants exceeds <strong>the</strong> number of study places, <strong>the</strong> authority<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Fachhochschul study can prescribe additi<strong>on</strong>al selecti<strong>on</strong> mechanisms for all k<strong>in</strong>ds of applicants.<br />

II.2. Intermediate qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

In <strong>the</strong> Austrian higher educati<strong>on</strong> system, <strong>the</strong>re are no <strong>in</strong>termediate qualificati<strong>on</strong>s. As laid down above, <strong>the</strong> first stage of a<br />

diploma study is completed by <strong>the</strong> first diploma exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. This exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> gives <strong>the</strong> right to enter <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d stage of<br />

study, but is not an <strong>in</strong>dependent <strong>in</strong>termediate qualificati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

II.3. F<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Everybody who has completed his or her diploma or doctoral studies is awarded an academic degree by <strong>the</strong> relevant<br />

<strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> of higher educati<strong>on</strong>. The degree entitles <strong>the</strong> holder to use <strong>the</strong> title <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> prescribed versi<strong>on</strong>s, to be admitted<br />

to fur<strong>the</strong>r studies, and to apply for an academic professi<strong>on</strong>. Foreign qualificati<strong>on</strong>s are recognised (Nostrifizierung) if <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

equivalent <strong>in</strong> terms of level, c<strong>on</strong>tent, and extent of <strong>the</strong> studies completed and if <strong>the</strong> award<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> is recognised as an<br />

<strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> of higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> State of orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

As a rule, Austrian academic degrees exist <strong>in</strong> a German versi<strong>on</strong>, a Lat<strong>in</strong> versi<strong>on</strong>, and an abbreviated versi<strong>on</strong>. Some of <strong>the</strong>m<br />

exist <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> two versi<strong>on</strong>s. A dist<strong>in</strong>cti<strong>on</strong> is made between <strong>the</strong> male and <strong>the</strong> female word<strong>in</strong>g. A list of all academic degrees is<br />

given <strong>in</strong> Appendix II.<br />

II.4. Regulated professi<strong>on</strong>s under directives of <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> Community<br />

Appendix III c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s a list of regulated academic professi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> Austria fall<strong>in</strong>g under <strong>the</strong> first general directive (89/48/EEC)<br />

or under sectorial directives.
