Structure of studies, curricula, exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Dentistry tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is uniformly governed country-wide <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> law <strong>on</strong> dental practice and <strong>the</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s govern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

licens<strong>in</strong>g of dentists issued <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of this law. It c<strong>on</strong>sists of:<br />

at least 10 semesters (five years) of studies <strong>in</strong> dentistry;<br />

successful completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g State exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

(i) <strong>the</strong> pre-degree science exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> (Naturwissenschaftliche Prüfung)<br />

(ii) <strong>the</strong> pre-degree dentistry exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> (Zahnärztliche Vorprüfung)<br />

(iii) <strong>the</strong> degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> dentistry (Zahnärztliche Prüfung).<br />

Dental studies are divided up <strong>in</strong>to a pre-cl<strong>in</strong>ical and a cl<strong>in</strong>ical part of five semesters (two and half years) each and <strong>in</strong>volve<br />

both <strong>the</strong>oretical and practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. The regulati<strong>on</strong>s govern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> licens<strong>in</strong>g of dentists stipulate compulsory courses<br />

(lectures, practical courses, etc.). The various <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong> are free to offer o<strong>the</strong>r courses as well.<br />

(a) On register<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> pre-degree science exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, students must document that <strong>the</strong>y:<br />

have studied dentistry <strong>in</strong> accordance with regulati<strong>on</strong>s for at least two semesters at a German university;<br />

have regularly attended a course of lectures <strong>in</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r zoology or biology for <strong>on</strong>e semester and lecture courses <strong>in</strong> both<br />

physics and chemistry for two semesters, complet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m successfully;<br />

have regularly attended a practical course <strong>in</strong> chemistry for <strong>on</strong>e semester, complet<strong>in</strong>g it successfully.<br />

(b) On registrati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> pre-degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> dentistry, students must document that <strong>the</strong>y:<br />

have studied dentistry for at least five semesters;<br />

have passed <strong>the</strong> pre-degree science exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

have attended lectures <strong>on</strong> histology and embryology, physiol- ogy, physiological chemistry, materials science and<br />

anatomy; and<br />

have regularly attended and successfully completed a course <strong>in</strong> practical anatomy, a practical <strong>in</strong> physiology and<br />

physiological chemistry, a course <strong>in</strong> microscopy and anatomy, a technical preparatory course, and courses <strong>in</strong> dental<br />

pros<strong>the</strong>sis.
