Descripti<strong>on</strong> of a degree programme <strong>in</strong><br />

comparative literature at <strong>the</strong> University<br />

of Hels<strong>in</strong>ki<br />

General structure of kandidaatti and maisteri degrees <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> humanities (home students)<br />

Humanististen tieteiden kandidaatti/Kandidat i humanistiska vetenskaper (Bachelor of Arts) c<strong>on</strong>sists of 120 credits (<strong>on</strong>e<br />

credit, corresp<strong>on</strong>ds to approximately 40 hours of work), subdivided as follows:<br />

language and communicati<strong>on</strong> studies, 10 credits, i.e. studies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> native language (two credits), <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r official<br />

language (i.e. Swedish for F<strong>in</strong>nish-speakers, F<strong>in</strong>nish for Swedish-speakers, two credits), and <strong>in</strong> two foreign languages<br />

(six credits);<br />

basic (20 credits) and <strong>in</strong>termediate (20 credits) studies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> major subject, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Bachelor’s <strong>the</strong>sis;<br />

three modules, a total of 60 credits, <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e to four m<strong>in</strong>or subjects. One of <strong>the</strong> modules may be replaced by advanced<br />

studies (20 credits) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> major and <strong>in</strong> place of <strong>on</strong>e full module (20 credits), students may complete two half-modules (10<br />

credits each);<br />

elective studies, 10 credits;<br />

a written ‘maturity test’, an essay.<br />

Filosofian maisteri/Filosofie magister (Master of Arts) c<strong>on</strong>sists of 160 credits; i.e. <strong>in</strong> additi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> humanististen tieteiden<br />

kandidaatti syllabus, students complete 40 credits as follows:<br />

a 20-credit advanced module <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> major subject. However, if a student has already <strong>in</strong>cluded this module <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

kandidaatti curriculum, he/she must complete a module <strong>in</strong> some o<strong>the</strong>r subject;<br />

a Master’s <strong>the</strong>sis, 20 credits, also called pro gradu <strong>the</strong>sis. The ‘maturity test’ need not be taken if <strong>the</strong> student has already<br />

passed it for <strong>the</strong> Bachelor’s degree.<br />

General course structure and c<strong>on</strong>tents <strong>in</strong> comparative literature<br />

(major subject studies)<br />

Studies <strong>in</strong> comparative literature comprise basic, <strong>in</strong>termediate and advanced studies. As a rule, students are free to decide <strong>the</strong><br />

order <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y take <strong>the</strong> courses. However, <strong>the</strong> basic course <strong>in</strong> literary criticism has to be taken at first. The requirement<br />

for attend<strong>in</strong>g a sem<strong>in</strong>ar <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>termediate studies is to have completed basic studies and two <strong>in</strong>termediate units: history of<br />

literary criticism and literary <strong>the</strong>ory (<strong>on</strong>e of its units). To be able to start <strong>the</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ar of advanced studies, students must have<br />

completed <strong>the</strong> basic and <strong>in</strong>termediate studies.<br />

Study units usually c<strong>on</strong>sist of an opti<strong>on</strong>al lecture course end<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> an exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> and/or a f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> based <strong>on</strong> set<br />

literature. Courses may also <strong>in</strong>clude, or <strong>the</strong>y can be replaced by, written assignments <strong>on</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g material set by <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>er.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> advanced sem<strong>in</strong>ar, <strong>the</strong><br />

student has to defend his/her sem<strong>in</strong>ar paper and act as an opp<strong>on</strong>ent<br />

of a paper prepared by some o<strong>the</strong>r participant.<br />

A grad<strong>in</strong>g scale from three (<strong>the</strong> highest) to <strong>on</strong>e is used <strong>in</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s and courses. The completed basic, <strong>in</strong>termediate and<br />

advanced studies, are graded excellent, good or satisfactory.<br />

The basic studies (20 credits) acqua<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong> student with <strong>the</strong> field of literature, i.e. literary history and literary genres; a general<br />

<strong>in</strong>troducti<strong>on</strong> to critical <strong>the</strong>ory and practice is also <strong>in</strong>cluded. Studies c<strong>on</strong>sist of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g units:
