In <strong>the</strong> early stages of a university degree, a student may change course, without los<strong>in</strong>g academic credit. This becomes<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly difficult after <strong>the</strong> first year. The holder of a DipHE could also obta<strong>in</strong> a degree after <strong>on</strong>e or two years of fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

study.<br />

II.3. F<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

II.3.1. F<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-university higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

N<strong>on</strong>-university awards can be c<strong>on</strong>ferred by:<br />

<strong>the</strong> BTEC (diplomas and certificates);<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s that give <strong>the</strong> course.<br />

The established levels of sub-degree awards are:<br />

nati<strong>on</strong>al certificate (NC),<br />

higher nati<strong>on</strong>al certificate (HNC),<br />

nati<strong>on</strong>al diploma (ND),<br />

higher nati<strong>on</strong>al diploma (HND).<br />

Certificate and higher certificate<br />

Courses of study for a certificate are part-time and last two or three years, depend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> field. They must <strong>in</strong>clude a<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imum of 10 units. Such certificate programmes were orig<strong>in</strong>ally <strong>in</strong>tended for people already work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field and thus<br />

ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir practical experience <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> job.<br />

Diploma and higher diploma<br />

Courses of study for <strong>the</strong> diploma are full-time and last two years, although <strong>the</strong>re are also three-year varieties that <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>on</strong>e<br />

year of work-study. They must cover a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 16 units.<br />

The programmes for BTEC certificates are c<strong>on</strong>centrated ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omic-adm<strong>in</strong>istrative and technical sectors, for<br />

example bus<strong>in</strong>ess studies, computer studies, management studies, market<strong>in</strong>g, eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, and hotel, cater<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>al<br />

management. There are also many different diplomas <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fields of art and design, and <strong>the</strong> physical sciences. BTEC courses<br />

are developed locally <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of nati<strong>on</strong>al criteria laid down by BTEC. Students are assessed locally through c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous<br />

assessment moderated by BTEC.<br />

II.3.2. F<strong>in</strong>al university qualificati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

These are awarded when <strong>the</strong> student successfully completes <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s, projects or dissertati<strong>on</strong>s prescribed by <strong>the</strong><br />

subject regulati<strong>on</strong>s. The exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s are adm<strong>in</strong>istered by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> itself.<br />

They may be set and marked by <strong>the</strong> staff who teach <strong>the</strong> courses. An external (visit<strong>in</strong>g) exam<strong>in</strong>er moderates all degree<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s. Courses are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly expressed <strong>in</strong> terms of units which permit <strong>the</strong> student to accumulate credits.<br />

The student’s study load varies from a low number of c<strong>on</strong>tact hours per week <strong>in</strong> an arts subject, to allow time for <strong>in</strong>dependent,<br />

self-directed<br />

private study, to a very high number <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e or eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g where <strong>the</strong>re is much observati<strong>on</strong> and practice.<br />

The student is sometimes required to undertake a research paper or project, as part of his/her work for a first degree. This is<br />

not to be c<strong>on</strong>fused with <strong>the</strong> more demand<strong>in</strong>g dissertati<strong>on</strong> (for <strong>the</strong> Master’s degree) and <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis (for <strong>the</strong> doctorate).
