grades.<br />

Idngre<strong>in</strong>anám (basic vocati<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong><br />

and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g/apprentice tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g)<br />

The basic vocati<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong> courses are offered <strong>in</strong> vocati<strong>on</strong>al technical schools (idnskólar) and <strong>in</strong> comprehensive schools<br />

(fjolbrautaskólar) and encompass both <strong>the</strong>oretical and practical educati<strong>on</strong>. The educati<strong>on</strong> gives tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for employment<br />

and/or tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for studies <strong>in</strong> specialised schools, colleges or universities (stúdentspróf).<br />

All pupils pursu<strong>in</strong>g vocati<strong>on</strong>al-technical courses are required to take <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g subjects: Icelandic, four credits; foreign<br />

languages, eight credits; social sciences, two credits; ma<strong>the</strong>matics, four credits and account<strong>in</strong>g, two credits. (See II.1.2 for<br />

Study courses lead<strong>in</strong>g to full trade certificati<strong>on</strong> take three or four years. Pupils can choose <strong>on</strong>e of three routes: (1) An<br />

apprenticeship agreement with a master tradesman; (2) basic study, i.e. <strong>the</strong> first year of vocati<strong>on</strong>al study <strong>in</strong> school, followed<br />

by an apprenticeship agreement with a master tradesman; or (3) basic study, i.e. first year of vocati<strong>on</strong>al study <strong>in</strong> school,<br />

By <strong>the</strong> apprenticeship agreement <strong>the</strong> master tradesman accepts resp<strong>on</strong>sibility for <strong>the</strong> practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> apprentice.<br />

Vocati<strong>on</strong>al technical schools or comprehensive schools provide <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical <strong>in</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> and practical <strong>in</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> apart from<br />

that which takes place at <strong>the</strong> apprentice’s place of employment. On <strong>the</strong> completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> study period <strong>the</strong> apprentice takes <strong>the</strong><br />

journeyman’s exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> (sve<strong>in</strong>spróf) which provides him with qualificati<strong>on</strong>s to work <strong>in</strong> his trade.<br />

Pupils can choose courses of study <strong>in</strong> 10 different areas <strong>in</strong> this sector of upper sec<strong>on</strong>dary educati<strong>on</strong> and each area is divided<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a number of specialised l<strong>in</strong>es of study. A pupil who has completed <strong>the</strong> journeyman’s exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> can qualify as a master<br />
