These types of school award <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g five types of VWO diploma:<br />

gymnasium A and gymnasium B;<br />

a<strong>the</strong>neum A and a<strong>the</strong>neum B; and<br />

<strong>on</strong>gedeeld VWO (unified VWO).<br />

The name of <strong>the</strong> type of VWO course followed is stated <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> diploma.<br />

A VWO diploma is obta<strong>in</strong>ed follow<strong>in</strong>g 13 years of general educati<strong>on</strong>: seven years of pre-primary and primary educati<strong>on</strong> from<br />

<strong>the</strong> age of five, followed by six years of sec<strong>on</strong>dary educati<strong>on</strong>. Pupils have approximately 30 hours of less<strong>on</strong>s per week dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> school year of 40 weeks.<br />

Up to <strong>the</strong> fifth year, <strong>the</strong> VWO curriculum c<strong>on</strong>sists ma<strong>in</strong>ly of compulsory subjects. Seven subjects are chosen for <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, of which five are compulsory and two are opti<strong>on</strong>al.<br />

The comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of subjects is fur<strong>the</strong>rmore determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> type of VWO: at a gymnasium, <strong>the</strong> emphasis is <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> classical<br />

languages; <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> a<strong>the</strong>neum, classical languages are offered as opti<strong>on</strong>al subjects and <strong>the</strong> emphasis may be <strong>on</strong> languages and<br />

social sciences.<br />

The choice of subjects also depends <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>e chosen with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> type. Both <strong>the</strong> gymnasium and <strong>the</strong> a<strong>the</strong>neum<br />

have <strong>the</strong> A group of discipl<strong>in</strong>es where <strong>the</strong> emphasis is <strong>on</strong> languages and social sciences, and <strong>the</strong> B group of discipl<strong>in</strong>es where<br />

<strong>the</strong> emphasis is <strong>on</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics and<br />

sciences.<br />

The <strong>on</strong>gedeeld VWO (unified VWO) differs <strong>in</strong> that <strong>the</strong>re is no divisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>to A or B groups of discipl<strong>in</strong>es. This gives <strong>the</strong> pupils<br />

greater freedom when choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir subjects for <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>on</strong>ly two or three subjects are<br />

compulsory <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>on</strong>gedeeld VWO.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong><br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sists of two parts — a central written part, held nati<strong>on</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tent of which is determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong><br />

M<strong>in</strong>istry of Educati<strong>on</strong>, Culture and Science, and a school exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sist<strong>in</strong>g of a series of tests set by <strong>the</strong> school dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al school year.<br />

Pupils who take an exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> an eighth subject receive a certificate from <strong>the</strong> school which is added to <strong>the</strong> diploma. The<br />

f<strong>in</strong>al results achieved <strong>in</strong> this subject have no effect <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> overall result of <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. Candidates who fail some subjects<br />

receive a certificate for <strong>the</strong> subjects which were passed.<br />

There is also a possibility of obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> VWO diploma by pass<strong>in</strong>g a State exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>. This exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tent of<br />

which does not differ from that described above, is set by a commissi<strong>on</strong> appo<strong>in</strong>ted by <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>ister for Educati<strong>on</strong>, Culture and<br />

Science.<br />

Grad<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The evaluati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> student’s performance is expressed <strong>in</strong> numbers <strong>on</strong> a scale of 1 (lowest grade) to 10 (highest grade). This<br />

scale is used <strong>in</strong> primary educati<strong>on</strong> as well as <strong>in</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary and higher educati<strong>on</strong>. The grad<strong>in</strong>g scale is as follows:<br />

1: very bad 6: sufficient<br />

2: bad 7: amply sufficient<br />

3: low 8: good<br />

4: <strong>in</strong>sufficient 9: very good<br />

5: almost sufficient 10: excellent.<br />

Frequency distributi<strong>on</strong>s per year <strong>in</strong>dicate that <strong>the</strong> grades 9 and 10 are rarely given.
