II. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s and diplomas<br />

II.1. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s for admissi<strong>on</strong> to<br />

university and n<strong>on</strong>-university<br />

higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Admissi<strong>on</strong> requirements are normally <strong>the</strong> same for all <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of<br />

higher educati<strong>on</strong> and presuppose 12 years of school educati<strong>on</strong>. This comprises n<strong>in</strong>e years of compulsory school (grunnskole),<br />

i.e. six years<br />

of primary school<strong>in</strong>g (barneskole) and three years <strong>in</strong> lower sec<strong>on</strong>dary school (ungdomsskole). This is followed by three years<br />

of upper-sec<strong>on</strong>dary educati<strong>on</strong> (videregående skole). From August 1997, compulsory educati<strong>on</strong> has been extended from 9 to 10<br />

years by lower<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> school start<strong>in</strong>g age from seven to six.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> upper-sec<strong>on</strong>dary school <strong>the</strong>re are 13 areas of study. General access to higher educati<strong>on</strong> is granted to students who have<br />

completed general and ec<strong>on</strong>omic adm<strong>in</strong>istrative studies (allmenne og øk<strong>on</strong>omisk-adm<strong>in</strong>istrative fag), general subjects with<br />

music, dance or drama, general studies with arts, crafts and design or general studies with physical educati<strong>on</strong>. Those who have<br />

completed vocati<strong>on</strong>al upper-sec<strong>on</strong>dary<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> may qualify for admissi<strong>on</strong> to higher educati<strong>on</strong> by tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

additi<strong>on</strong>al courses with general subjects of Norwegian, English, social sciences, ma<strong>the</strong>matics and natural sciences.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first year of general studies a foundati<strong>on</strong> course is taken; <strong>the</strong>re is no specialisati<strong>on</strong> at this level. Specialisati<strong>on</strong><br />

beg<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d year and c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> third. In <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> students sit for a limited number of nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s, both written and oral, <strong>in</strong><br />

subjects central to <strong>the</strong>ir branch of study.<br />

Admissi<strong>on</strong> to higher educati<strong>on</strong> may also be given to mature students (above <strong>the</strong> age of 23) based <strong>on</strong> an <strong>in</strong>dividual evaluati<strong>on</strong><br />

of previous educati<strong>on</strong> and work experience.<br />

Grades are awarded <strong>on</strong> a scale from six to nought, with six be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> highest grade. Grades two and above are pass<strong>in</strong>g grades.<br />

The words fullført og bestått (completed and passed) <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> certificate (vitnemål) <strong>in</strong>dicate that <strong>the</strong> candidate has passed <strong>the</strong><br />

whole course of study.<br />

The certificate states <strong>the</strong> number of hours and year grade for each<br />

subject and <strong>the</strong> nati<strong>on</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> grade for a limited number of<br />

subjects.<br />

Certa<strong>in</strong> programmes of higher educati<strong>on</strong> require specialisati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> subjects at <strong>the</strong> upper-sec<strong>on</strong>dary school as general<br />

admissi<strong>on</strong> requirements, i.e. dentistry, medic<strong>in</strong>e, pharmacy, eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, veter<strong>in</strong>ary medic<strong>in</strong>e, arts and crafts studies.<br />

II.2. Undergraduate programmes <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Degrees offered by <strong>the</strong> universities and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> may vary from <strong>on</strong>e <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> next. Questi<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>cern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

degrees, exams and normal time of study are decided by <strong>the</strong> government. Decisi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> subject areas which could be<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> an exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, are taken by <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istry.<br />

II.2.1. Undergraduate n<strong>on</strong>-university programmes
