Accreditati<strong>on</strong><br />

Authorisati<strong>on</strong> given by an official body (e.g. BTEC) to teach courses of an approved standard; to be self-m<strong>on</strong>itor<strong>in</strong>g and selfvalidat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and, <strong>in</strong> general, to be fully resp<strong>on</strong>sible for nati<strong>on</strong>al awards.<br />

A level<br />

See ‘general certificate of educati<strong>on</strong> — advanced Level’.<br />

Certificate<br />

Proof that <strong>on</strong>e has successfully completed a course of study or tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Clear<strong>in</strong>g house<br />

Central office (e.g. Universities and Colleges Admissi<strong>on</strong> Service — UCAS) to which students send <strong>the</strong>ir multiple applicati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

for places <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s and which liaises with admissi<strong>on</strong>s officers and departments.<br />

Clear<strong>in</strong>g stage<br />

F<strong>in</strong>al period of placement of students at universities and colleges.<br />

Degree<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>, nati<strong>on</strong>ally recognised, higher educati<strong>on</strong> award for prescribed course of study last<strong>in</strong>g at least three full-time years after<br />

matriculati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Degree-level course<br />

Course which is not part of a degree but is generally recognised as equivalent.<br />

Diploma<br />

Implies a higher or more <strong>in</strong>tensive level of study than that undertaken for a certificate. May <strong>in</strong>clude certificates, may refer to<br />

full-time study as opposed to part-time. May refer to sec<strong>on</strong>dary educati<strong>on</strong> or postgraduate work. May be nati<strong>on</strong>al or<br />

<strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>-specific.<br />

Dissertati<strong>on</strong><br />

L<strong>on</strong>g essay or m<strong>in</strong>i <strong>the</strong>sis requir<strong>in</strong>g survey of <strong>the</strong> literature and a research exercise, undertaken <strong>in</strong> fulfilment (partial) of<br />

requirements for a Master degree.<br />

First degree<br />

Bachelor degree awarded after three or four years (full-time) of successful coursework after matriculati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> a higher<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

General certificate of educati<strong>on</strong> advanced level<br />

F<strong>in</strong>al sec<strong>on</strong>dary school exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s set by nati<strong>on</strong>al boards, taken at 18, usually <strong>in</strong> three related subjects, to obta<strong>in</strong> access to<br />

higher studies and professi<strong>on</strong>al tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Graduate<br />

One who has obta<strong>in</strong>ed a first degree.<br />

<strong>Higher</strong> degree<br />

Master’s or doctorate degree awarded to graduates after complet<strong>in</strong>g study or research requirements. A Master’s degree<br />

requires a m<strong>in</strong>imum of <strong>on</strong>e postgraduate year, while a doctorate requires three to four years.<br />

Instituti<strong>on</strong> of higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Instituti<strong>on</strong> offer<strong>in</strong>g post-sec<strong>on</strong>dary-level courses to qualified students for a higher diploma or degree, often <strong>in</strong> teacher<br />

educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
