Stage II studies <strong>in</strong>volve fur<strong>the</strong>r course study <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> three selected subject areas. The m<strong>in</strong>imum requirements to be fulfilled<br />

prior to registrati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Magister degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude lecture courses, and advanced sem<strong>in</strong>ars for which certificates<br />

must be acquired.<br />

Major: German language and literature (two advanced sem<strong>in</strong>ar certificates):<br />

modern German literature;<br />

old German and old German literature; or<br />

German language.<br />

First m<strong>in</strong>or: history (<strong>on</strong>e advanced sem<strong>in</strong>ar certificate):<br />

medieval or modern history.<br />

Sec<strong>on</strong>d m<strong>in</strong>or: sociology (four <strong>in</strong>troductory sem<strong>in</strong>ar certificates, <strong>on</strong>e advanced sem<strong>in</strong>ar certificate):<br />

methods of empirical social research I and II;<br />

statistics for students of social science;<br />

foundati<strong>on</strong>s of sociology (micro and macro-sociology);<br />

<strong>on</strong>e opti<strong>on</strong>al core area.<br />

The Magister degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sists of <strong>the</strong> Magister <strong>the</strong>sis <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> major subject, as well as written and oral exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> three established subject areas.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Magister <strong>the</strong>sis, students are to show that <strong>the</strong>y are capable of <strong>in</strong>dependently analys<strong>in</strong>g a problem taken from <strong>the</strong>ir ma<strong>in</strong><br />

area of study and apply<strong>in</strong>g scholarly methods <strong>in</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g so. This must normally be d<strong>on</strong>e with<strong>in</strong> a period of six m<strong>on</strong>ths. The time<br />

limit can be extended for ano<strong>the</strong>r three m<strong>on</strong>ths if a good reas<strong>on</strong> is given. The Magister <strong>the</strong>sis is assessed by two professors.<br />

Degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual subjects c<strong>on</strong>sist of a written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> and an oral exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> major subject<br />

and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> two m<strong>in</strong>ors.<br />

On pass<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Magister degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> student <strong>in</strong> questi<strong>on</strong> is issued a certificate <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> subject of and <strong>the</strong><br />

grade received <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Magister <strong>the</strong>sis, grades received <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual subject exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s and <strong>the</strong> overall grade. At <strong>the</strong><br />

same time, a Magister diploma is issued <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of which <strong>the</strong> academic degree Magister Artium (MA) is awarded.<br />

II.3. Lizentiat degree<br />

The Lizentiat degree is obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of graduate or supplementary studies follow<strong>in</strong>g atta<strong>in</strong>ment of an <strong>in</strong>itial degree.<br />

This degree can also be obta<strong>in</strong>ed follow<strong>in</strong>g a degree course <strong>in</strong> an area of Catholic <strong>the</strong>ology.<br />

II.4. State exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s for teach<strong>in</strong>g careers<br />

II.4.1. General characteristics<br />

Teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is regulated differently <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual Länder <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Federal Republic of Germany. It is based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> school<br />

types or levels. The arrangement of <strong>the</strong> various teach<strong>in</strong>g careers accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> different school types or levels is governed<br />

by Land law. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> summary agreed <strong>on</strong> by <strong>the</strong> Stand<strong>in</strong>g C<strong>on</strong>ference of <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>isters for Educati<strong>on</strong> and Cultural<br />

Affairs of <strong>the</strong> Länder <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong> implementati<strong>on</strong> of EC Directive 89/48/EEC, all <strong>the</strong> many different types of<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g career are classified under <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g designati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
