II.3. Organisati<strong>on</strong> of courses of study<br />

In general, <strong>the</strong> academic year beg<strong>in</strong>s around September/October and f<strong>in</strong>ishes towards <strong>the</strong> end of September of <strong>the</strong> next year.<br />

The durati<strong>on</strong> of an academic school year is laid down: a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 1 500 and a maximum of 1 800 hours per year. This is<br />

<strong>the</strong> number of hours estimated to be required for learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> subject matter. These are <strong>the</strong> total number of c<strong>on</strong>tact hours and<br />

sem<strong>in</strong>ars and hours of <strong>in</strong>dependent study. Each tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course, each school year and each subject are quantified <strong>in</strong> a number<br />

of study po<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />

The universities and hogescholen can offer <strong>the</strong>ir tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of c<strong>on</strong>tact educati<strong>on</strong> or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of open<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> (distance learn<strong>in</strong>g). Offer<strong>in</strong>g distance courses implies <strong>the</strong> development of study <strong>in</strong> form and c<strong>on</strong>tent. They can offer<br />

full-time courses and part-time courses separately <strong>in</strong> order to obta<strong>in</strong> an academic degree.<br />

Students take about <strong>on</strong>e or two weeks to prepare for <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s. At <strong>the</strong> end of each year, <strong>the</strong> student’s knowledge of <strong>the</strong><br />

subject matter is assessed by means of exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s, usually both <strong>the</strong>oretical and practical. There are two exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong><br />

periods: June-July and September. The student can sit for an early exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> first semester (January-<br />

February).<br />

The regulati<strong>on</strong>s outl<strong>in</strong>e a m<strong>in</strong>imum period of study for each cycle per discipl<strong>in</strong>e. The student must successfully c<strong>on</strong>clude each<br />

cycle or period of study, before be<strong>in</strong>g allowed to start <strong>the</strong> next cycle.<br />

two-cycle courses c<strong>on</strong>sist of a first cycle, which takes two years and a sec<strong>on</strong>d cycle, which takes two or three<br />

<br />

supplementary courses;<br />

specialisati<strong>on</strong> courses;<br />

teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

(iii) Post-hogeschool tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

Besides basic and advanced tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> hogescholen offer a form of fur<strong>the</strong>r tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses.<br />

(b) University sector<br />

(i) Basic academic tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses, divided <strong>in</strong>to two cycles: a first cycle of two or three years lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>termediate university qualificati<strong>on</strong> and a sec<strong>on</strong>d cycle of two, three or four years lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al university<br />

qualificati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The first cycle ma<strong>in</strong>ly provides a wide general basic tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g; <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d year of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial cycle provides more and<br />

more specific opti<strong>on</strong>s and choices of courses, <strong>in</strong> preparati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d cycle.<br />

The sec<strong>on</strong>d cycle provides for each ma<strong>in</strong> subject a specialised tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g culm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a <strong>the</strong>sis or project paper. The<br />

opti<strong>on</strong>s and ma<strong>in</strong> subjects with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same discipl<strong>in</strong>e have a comm<strong>on</strong> basis.
