As menti<strong>on</strong>ed, <strong>the</strong>re will generally be an exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> each subject follow<strong>in</strong>g completi<strong>on</strong> of each academic year. Where<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is a choice between H<strong>on</strong>ours and general degrees (see below), selecti<strong>on</strong> for H<strong>on</strong>ours is often made <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of firstor<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d-year exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> results.<br />

With<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mark<strong>in</strong>g system of <strong>the</strong> universities <strong>the</strong>re is a differentiati<strong>on</strong> made between general and H<strong>on</strong>ours degrees. This<br />

differentiati<strong>on</strong> is made <strong>in</strong> some faculties, notably arts and science.<br />

The choice between general and H<strong>on</strong>ours degrees is with Bachelor degrees <strong>on</strong>ly. Thus, a Bachelor degree may be c<strong>on</strong>ferred as<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r a general degree or an H<strong>on</strong>ours degree:<br />

General degrees<br />

These do not <strong>in</strong>volve as much specialisati<strong>on</strong> as H<strong>on</strong>ours degrees, and may <strong>the</strong>refore cover a broader range of subjects. They<br />

are awarded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g classes:<br />

A general degree is normally of three years <strong>in</strong> durati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Bachelor (H<strong>on</strong>ours) degree<br />

The H<strong>on</strong>ours degree generally necessitates a more <strong>in</strong>-depth study of a particular subject; it may <strong>in</strong>volve more opti<strong>on</strong>al courses,<br />

project work or a dissertati<strong>on</strong> and possibly a l<strong>on</strong>ger course durati<strong>on</strong>, usually four years.It is also possible to obta<strong>in</strong> an H<strong>on</strong>ours<br />

degree from certa<strong>in</strong> three year courses. H<strong>on</strong>ours degrees may be awarded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g classes:<br />

First Class H<strong>on</strong>ours<br />

Sec<strong>on</strong>d Class H<strong>on</strong>ours, grade I<br />

Sec<strong>on</strong>d Class H<strong>on</strong>ours, grade II<br />

Third Class H<strong>on</strong>ours<br />
