III. Special types and forms of f<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> higher<br />

educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Secti<strong>on</strong> II gives a descripti<strong>on</strong> of higher educati<strong>on</strong> degrees and diplomas which are regulated by <strong>the</strong> WHW. The M<strong>in</strong>ister for<br />

Educati<strong>on</strong>, Culture and Science is resp<strong>on</strong>sible for <strong>the</strong>se degrees and, to a certa<strong>in</strong> extent, <strong>the</strong> study programmes <strong>the</strong>y represent.<br />

Besides <strong>the</strong>se, <strong>the</strong>re are a number of higher educati<strong>on</strong> diplomas and courses which <strong>in</strong> many cases do not fall under <strong>the</strong><br />

legislati<strong>on</strong> of this m<strong>in</strong>istry. This category <strong>in</strong>cludes courses which are regulated by o<strong>the</strong>r m<strong>in</strong>istries, or, as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>aal <strong>on</strong>derwijs (<strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong>), are c<strong>on</strong>ferred by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong> which<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly fall under <strong>on</strong>e or more m<strong>in</strong>istries as regards fund<strong>in</strong>g. This category also <strong>in</strong>cludes diplomas which are recognised by <strong>the</strong><br />

wet op de erkende <strong>on</strong>derwijs<strong>in</strong>stell<strong>in</strong>gen (WEO), or <strong>the</strong> recognised educati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s act of 1986 (see I.1).<br />

The courses discussed <strong>in</strong> this chapter all require a HAVO diploma (see II.1.1) or its equivalent for admissi<strong>on</strong>, with <strong>the</strong><br />

excepti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong> programmes, which <strong>in</strong> most cases require a Bachelor’s degree, and <strong>the</strong> NIVRA<br />

programme <strong>in</strong> accountancy, for which a VWO diploma is required.<br />

The types of educati<strong>on</strong> are:<br />

Het <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>aal <strong>on</strong>derwijs (<strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong>);<br />

Courses regulated by <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>istries:<br />

M<strong>in</strong>istry of Health, Welfare and Sport;<br />

M<strong>in</strong>istry of Defence;<br />

M<strong>in</strong>istry of <strong>the</strong> Interior;<br />

M<strong>in</strong>istry of Ec<strong>on</strong>omic Affairs.<br />

Internati<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Internati<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands offers courses, at approximately 20 <strong>in</strong>dependent <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fields of science<br />

and technology, social sciences and law, bus<strong>in</strong>ess studies (management and adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong>), agricultural science, media,<br />

communicati<strong>on</strong> and transport<br />

science, medic<strong>in</strong>e and related sciences. These are advanced and supplementary courses <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong> which are ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

geared towards <strong>the</strong> problems and needs of develop<strong>in</strong>g countries. The courses are ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong>tended for participants from <strong>the</strong><br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g countries, and <strong>in</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> is <strong>in</strong> English.<br />

The various <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s offer courses which lead to a diploma, postgraduate diploma, or <strong>the</strong> degree Bachelor of Science or<br />

Master of Science. Some <strong>in</strong>stitutes also award MPhil and PhD degrees.<br />

Educati<strong>on</strong> which falls under m<strong>in</strong>istries o<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of Educati<strong>on</strong>, Culture and Science<br />

Some of <strong>the</strong> diplomas which can be obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of courses which fall under <strong>the</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>sibility of various m<strong>in</strong>istries<br />

are described <strong>in</strong> this group. The list is not exhaustive.<br />

1. M<strong>in</strong>istry of Health, Welfare and Sport:<br />

vroedvrouw (midwife) (length: four years);<br />

radiodiagnostisch/radio<strong>the</strong>rapeutisch laborant (radiodiagnostical/radio<strong>the</strong>rapeutical laboratory assistant) (length:<br />

three years);<br />

podo<strong>the</strong>rapeut (podo<strong>the</strong>rapist) (length: three years);<br />

orthoptist (orthoptist) (length: three years);<br />

oefen<strong>the</strong>rapeut Cesar (Cesar <strong>the</strong>rapist) (length: three years);<br />

m<strong>on</strong>dhygiënist (oral hygiene specialist) (length: three years).<br />

2. M<strong>in</strong>istry of Defence:<br />

officer’s diploma of <strong>the</strong> K<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>klijke Militaire Academie (Royal Military Academy) (length: three to six years,<br />

depend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> programme and entrance level);<br />

officer’s diploma of <strong>the</strong> K<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>klijk Instituut van de mar<strong>in</strong>e (Royal Naval Institute) (length: five years).
