Colleges and <strong>in</strong>stitutes sometimes offer places to candidates who have relatively low grades <strong>on</strong> two A levels or even less.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al clear<strong>in</strong>g stages, when students are still look<strong>in</strong>g for places and unfilled courses are look<strong>in</strong>g for applicants, an<br />

applicant with modest qualificati<strong>on</strong>s may f<strong>in</strong>d a place <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> whose earlier c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>al offer he or she had failed to<br />

meet.<br />

II.1.2. Qualificati<strong>on</strong>s for admissi<strong>on</strong> to university<br />

As menti<strong>on</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Secti<strong>on</strong> II.1, <strong>the</strong>re are a number of certificates or diplomas that grant general admissi<strong>on</strong> to higher educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> general requirements, <strong>the</strong>re are specific course requirements.<br />

A student who fails to reach <strong>the</strong> general requirement but who has <strong>on</strong>e A level <strong>in</strong> additi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> required number of GCSEs<br />

may enroll <strong>in</strong> a BTEC higher nati<strong>on</strong>al diploma course at an <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> that also offers a degree <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject. Eventually such<br />

a student may be able to transfer to <strong>the</strong> degree course.<br />

General requirement<br />

The general requirement c<strong>on</strong>sists of four to five subjects at GCSE (m<strong>in</strong>imal grade is C, or <strong>the</strong> equivalent grade at O level or<br />

CSE) and A level of which at least two must be at A level.<br />

Course requirement<br />

Most universities stipulate <strong>the</strong> three A level passes at specific grade<br />

levels (between A and E) which <strong>the</strong>y are prepared to accept, but some make offers of places <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of two (good) A<br />

levels.<br />

The Open University sets no formal entry requirement.<br />

II.2. Intermediate qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

II.2.1 Intermediate qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-university higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

There are no formal <strong>in</strong>termediate qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> university higher educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK, but two cases are worth not<strong>in</strong>g. An<br />

approximati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> British system to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>termediate qualificati<strong>on</strong>s of some c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ental countries is <strong>the</strong> BTEC higher<br />

nati<strong>on</strong>al diploma or certificate. This is not c<strong>on</strong>ceived of as such, but <strong>in</strong> practice a student may complete his/her HND<br />

al<strong>on</strong>gside and shar<strong>in</strong>g courses with students <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first year of a science/technology degree. If <strong>the</strong> student’s results are<br />

sufficiently good, she/he may c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue with <strong>the</strong> course and complete <strong>the</strong> degree. C<strong>on</strong>versely, a poor student enrolled for <strong>the</strong><br />

degree may be able to obta<strong>in</strong> an HND before leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> course prematurely.<br />

In educati<strong>on</strong> it is also possible to do a two-year diploma <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong> (DipHE). Entry qualificati<strong>on</strong>s are usually a little<br />

more flexible than those for a degree course. The diploma is complete <strong>in</strong> itself or may be used as <strong>the</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong> for fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

study for ei<strong>the</strong>r a degree or a professi<strong>on</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

II.2.2 Academic recogniti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>in</strong>termediate<br />

qualificati<strong>on</strong>s for purposes of fur<strong>the</strong>r study<br />

A good HND may ga<strong>in</strong> exempti<strong>on</strong> from <strong>the</strong> first year of <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>in</strong> some science subjects and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.
