University educati<strong>on</strong> is <strong>in</strong>tended to tra<strong>in</strong> senior managers and professi<strong>on</strong>als capable of hold<strong>in</strong>g resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area of<br />

basic and applied research and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area of devis<strong>in</strong>g and apply<strong>in</strong>g scientific research with a view to <strong>the</strong> development of new<br />

technologies. C<strong>on</strong>siderable importance is attached to <strong>the</strong>oretical and specialist tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g as well as to science-based educati<strong>on</strong><br />

and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Holders of university degrees are employed <strong>in</strong> a very wide range of senior posts <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry, public bodies, educati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-trade sector. A specific university educati<strong>on</strong> is not usually based <strong>on</strong> a particular professi<strong>on</strong>, except for <strong>the</strong> regulated<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>s (lawyer, doctor,<br />

dentist, pharmacist, etc.). The full universities (université de Liège,<br />

université libre de Bruxelles (<strong>in</strong>dependent), université catholique de Louva<strong>in</strong>) are, by virtue of a decree, authorised to organise<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> scientific discipl<strong>in</strong>es grouped <strong>in</strong>to three sectors (social sciences, sciences, medical sciences).<br />

In <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r university establishments (université de M<strong>on</strong>s-Ha<strong>in</strong>aut, faculté universitaire des sciences agr<strong>on</strong>omiques de<br />

Gembloux (Agr<strong>on</strong>omic Sciences), facultés universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix à Namur, faculté polytechnique de M<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

facultés universitaires Sa<strong>in</strong>t-Louis, facultés universitaires catholique de M<strong>on</strong>s), educati<strong>on</strong> is limited to a few discipl<strong>in</strong>es<br />

relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> three abovementi<strong>on</strong>ed sectors.<br />

It is notable that <strong>the</strong> universities and university faculties cannot organise university studies <strong>in</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es for which <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

not been accredited by virtue of <strong>the</strong> law or of a decree. (In <strong>the</strong> rest of this chapter, <strong>the</strong> term ‘university establishment’ refers to<br />

all university educati<strong>on</strong>al establishments.)<br />

A fundamental reform of <strong>the</strong> organisati<strong>on</strong> of university educati<strong>on</strong> entered <strong>in</strong>to force at <strong>the</strong> start of <strong>the</strong> new academic year <strong>in</strong><br />

September 1995. This reform ma<strong>in</strong>ly aims to remove <strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>cti<strong>on</strong> between university qualificati<strong>on</strong>s awarded as legal<br />

degrees and those awarded as scientific degrees (see glossary). A s<strong>in</strong>gle type of ‘academic’ degree will be awarded by <strong>the</strong><br />

universities. The new decree also grants greater aut<strong>on</strong>omy to <strong>the</strong> universities, particularly with regard to sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tent of<br />

curricula and university cooperati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
