(a) SS courses<br />

They are all subject to numerus clausus regulati<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong>refore, prospective students must hold a laurea or an equivalent<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d level foreign qualificati<strong>on</strong>; <strong>the</strong>y must also pass a selective entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

As for foreign degrees, to avoid <strong>the</strong> time-c<strong>on</strong>sum<strong>in</strong>g, bureaucratic complicati<strong>on</strong>s of formal academic recogniti<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong>ir holders<br />

may take advantage of a simplified procedure by request<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> evaluati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>ir degrees ‘to <strong>the</strong> end of admissi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly to<br />

<strong>the</strong> SS’ of <strong>the</strong>ir choice. The university authority resp<strong>on</strong>sible for such a procedure is <strong>the</strong> director of <strong>the</strong> SS c<strong>on</strong>cerned who<br />

normally takes <strong>the</strong> advice of <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g staff.<br />

This procedure, however, cannot be c<strong>on</strong>sidered <strong>the</strong> usual, legal form of academic equivalence: as a matter of fact, <strong>in</strong> such<br />

cases <strong>the</strong> teachers’ purpose is not to analyse and compare curricula <strong>in</strong> detail, look<strong>in</strong>g for a high level of corresp<strong>on</strong>dence<br />

between courses and syllabuses, but ra<strong>the</strong>r to globally evaluate — <strong>in</strong> terms of c<strong>on</strong>tent and level — <strong>the</strong> foreign degrees <strong>in</strong> order<br />

to verify <strong>the</strong>ir holders’ suitability for <strong>the</strong> advanced studies <strong>in</strong> questi<strong>on</strong>. That is why this type of evaluati<strong>on</strong> does not result <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> award<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> comparable Italian laurea degrees and <strong>the</strong>refore does not produce <strong>the</strong> juridical effects <strong>in</strong>herent <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

The entrance exam <strong>in</strong>cludes a written paper and an oral <strong>in</strong>terview. When assess<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> candidates’ performance, <strong>the</strong> relevant<br />

board also evaluates <strong>the</strong>ir previous academic work and qualificati<strong>on</strong>s (e.g. a laurea<br />

<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>on</strong> a subject closely related to <strong>the</strong> specilisati<strong>on</strong> field of <strong>the</strong> school c<strong>on</strong>cerned; grades obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al laurea<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>; marks obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> those discipl<strong>in</strong>ary exams of <strong>the</strong>ir laurea curricula which are c<strong>on</strong>nected with <strong>the</strong> new specialist<br />

studies).<br />

(b) DR programmes<br />

They are open <strong>on</strong>ly to postgraduate students, i.e. holders of a laurea degree (or an equivalent foreign qualificati<strong>on</strong> at sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

university level).<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> possessi<strong>on</strong> of an adequate academic qualificati<strong>on</strong> (that is, sec<strong>on</strong>d level), admissi<strong>on</strong> is also subject to a<br />

c<strong>on</strong>corso, a public competiti<strong>on</strong> organised <strong>on</strong> a nati<strong>on</strong>al basis, which c<strong>on</strong>sists of a very selective written and oral exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Candidates must also give evidence of master<strong>in</strong>g a foreign language, both orally and <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Both <strong>the</strong> written and <strong>the</strong> oral part of <strong>the</strong> competitive admissi<strong>on</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> are graded <strong>on</strong> a 0 to 60 scale, with 40 as <strong>the</strong><br />

lowest pass<strong>in</strong>g mark.<br />

The nati<strong>on</strong>al c<strong>on</strong>corso, announced <strong>in</strong> May or June every year, takes place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g November or December.<br />

Italian and foreign holders of foreign degrees are allowed to participate <strong>in</strong> DR competitive entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong>ly after<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir degrees have been recognised as comparable to <strong>the</strong> relevant Italian laurea; to such an end, <strong>the</strong>y too may ask for <strong>the</strong><br />

applicati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> simplified recogniti<strong>on</strong> procedure already described <strong>in</strong> relati<strong>on</strong> to enrolment <strong>in</strong> SS courses.<br />

The university authority resp<strong>on</strong>sible is <strong>the</strong> director of <strong>the</strong> DR programme c<strong>on</strong>cerned, who c<strong>on</strong>sults <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g staff.<br />

Be<strong>in</strong>g requested and given ‘to <strong>the</strong> end of admissi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> DR entrance competitive exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong>ly’, that sort of<br />

recogniti<strong>on</strong> does not produce <strong>the</strong> same legal effects as formal academic recogniti<strong>on</strong> (called equipollenza).<br />

CPs (advanced courses)<br />

The most frequent c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> required for admissi<strong>on</strong> to a CP is a laurea degree <strong>in</strong> a related field; <strong>the</strong>re are also CPs accept<strong>in</strong>g<br />

holders of lower or even different qualificati<strong>on</strong>s (e.g. a first degree like a DU, or a post-sec<strong>on</strong>dary n<strong>on</strong>-university<br />

qualificati<strong>on</strong>), provided <strong>the</strong>y rank at university level.<br />
