It is possible to change to courses at o<strong>the</strong>r universities, but, depend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> subject areas, it may be difficult to get full credit for<br />

a course taken at ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>. Between n<strong>on</strong>-university <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s and from n<strong>on</strong>-university to university studies it is<br />

more difficult, but credit transfer is a possibility <strong>in</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es which are comm<strong>on</strong> to a particular course.<br />

The comm<strong>on</strong> part of <strong>the</strong> courses at <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g colleges qualifies students to go <strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> specialised stages at all <strong>the</strong><br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g colleges.<br />

The basic courses at Roskilde University and Aalborg University qualify students for admissi<strong>on</strong> to all fur<strong>the</strong>r study<br />

programmes at <strong>the</strong> respective university.<br />

Until 1998, <strong>the</strong> first stage of <strong>the</strong> course <strong>in</strong> pharmacy qualified a student for work as a pharmacist’s assistant and also for<br />

admissi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d stage courses. The first stage of <strong>the</strong> museum curator’s course qualifies a student for work as a<br />

c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> technician and also for admissi<strong>on</strong> to sec<strong>on</strong>d stage courses.<br />

II.3. F<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

With <strong>the</strong> excepti<strong>on</strong> of a small number of courses, higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

courses <strong>in</strong> Denmark are exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>-oriented. Courses are not made up of study weeks or po<strong>in</strong>ts. To achieve <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

qualificati<strong>on</strong>, students must complete a large number of exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s/tests, projects, etc. Not all students complete <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

studies with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prescribed study period. This<br />

is partly due to employment and family resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities. It is possible<br />

for students to take leave from <strong>the</strong>ir courses.<br />

II.3.1. F<strong>in</strong>al qualificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-university<br />

higher educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Colleges offer a wide range of different courses, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g social science courses and three or four courses qualify<strong>in</strong>g students<br />

for teach<strong>in</strong>g, social work, paramedical and technological professi<strong>on</strong>s, etc.<br />

Students take exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> a wide range of discipl<strong>in</strong>es relevant to <strong>the</strong> course. Major written assignments and project work<br />

may also be required. All courses <strong>in</strong>clude practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. A government notice<br />

covers each study programme and c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s stipulati<strong>on</strong>s regard<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> objectives and <strong>the</strong> structure of <strong>the</strong> course, its c<strong>on</strong>tent and details of assessment.<br />

The forms of exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> and assessment vary from course to course, but <strong>in</strong> all cases <strong>the</strong> knowledge ga<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course will<br />

be assessed by means of oral and written tests. These tests may be <strong>in</strong>ternal or external. Internal tests are assessed ei<strong>the</strong>r by<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternal exam<strong>in</strong>ers or by a comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>in</strong>ternal and external exam<strong>in</strong>ers appo<strong>in</strong>ted by <strong>the</strong> educati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>. External<br />

tests are assessed by <strong>in</strong>ternal exam<strong>in</strong>ers and <strong>on</strong>e or more external exam<strong>in</strong>ers who must not be c<strong>on</strong>nected with <strong>the</strong> educati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

<strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>. External exam<strong>in</strong>ers are appo<strong>in</strong>ted by <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of Educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> recommendati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>. At least<br />

<strong>on</strong>e third of <strong>the</strong><br />

courses must be tested by means of external exam<strong>in</strong>ers.<br />

As a rule, marks are expressed <strong>in</strong> terms of <strong>the</strong> 13-po<strong>in</strong>t scale (see I.3) or assessments as passed/failed. Excepti<strong>on</strong>s are <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>dergarten teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course, <strong>the</strong> leisure-time teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course and <strong>the</strong> socio-pedagogic course where <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g scale was used until 1994:<br />

A = excellent<br />

B = satisfactory<br />

C = acceptable<br />

E = unacceptable.<br />

On completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> course, a certificate/diploma is issued, <strong>on</strong> which <strong>the</strong> results of <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s taken are stated:
