(c) On registrati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> dentistry, students must document that <strong>the</strong>y:<br />

have studied dentistry for at least ten semesters;<br />

have passed <strong>the</strong> pre-degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> dentistry;<br />

have attended <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g lecture courses: <strong>in</strong>troducti<strong>on</strong> to dentistry, general surgery, diseases of <strong>the</strong> ear, nose and<br />

throat, hygiene (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g preventive medic<strong>in</strong>e), medical microbiology (with labs), <strong>in</strong>troducti<strong>on</strong> to orthod<strong>on</strong>tics, <strong>the</strong><br />

professi<strong>on</strong> and history of medic<strong>in</strong>e with special reference to dentistry; and also attended two lecture courses each <strong>in</strong><br />

pharmacology (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g prescripti<strong>on</strong> course), <strong>in</strong>ternal medic<strong>in</strong>e, diseases of <strong>the</strong> teeth, mouth and jaw, surgery of<br />

<strong>the</strong> teeth, mouth and jaw, dental preservati<strong>on</strong>, pros<strong>the</strong>tic dentistry and orthod<strong>on</strong>tics;<br />

have taken part regularly and successfully completed courses of <strong>on</strong>e semester <strong>in</strong> each of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g: pathohistology,<br />

chemical and physical cl<strong>in</strong>ical exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> methods, radiology with special c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> for protecti<strong>on</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

radiati<strong>on</strong>, tooth preservati<strong>on</strong> with exercises <strong>on</strong> models; and courses of two semesters <strong>in</strong> operati<strong>on</strong>s and orthod<strong>on</strong>tic<br />

treatment;<br />

have regularly attended and successfully completed <strong>on</strong>e semester each as an observer at a dental cl<strong>in</strong>ic and out-patients<br />

department and at <strong>the</strong> out-patients surgical department and as a tra<strong>in</strong>ee at a dermatology cl<strong>in</strong>ic; a two-semester<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>eeship <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course and at an out-patients cl<strong>in</strong>ic for dental preservati<strong>on</strong> and for dental pros<strong>the</strong>sis; and a threesemester<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>eeship at a cl<strong>in</strong>ic and out-patients cl<strong>in</strong>ic for dental, oral and jaw diseases.<br />

3. In accordance with <strong>the</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s govern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> licens<strong>in</strong>g of dentists, <strong>the</strong> State exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s are taken before State<br />

boards at <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of higher educati<strong>on</strong>. They are oral, practical and, to <strong>the</strong> extent that reports and treatment plans<br />

need to be formulated, written.<br />

(a) The pre-degree science exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> covers <strong>the</strong> subjects: physics, chemistry, zoology or biology.<br />

(b) The pre-degree dentistry exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> covers <strong>the</strong> subjects: anat-omy, physiology, physiological chemistry, dental<br />

pros<strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

(c) The degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> dentistry covers <strong>the</strong> subjects: gen- eral pathology and pathological anatomy,<br />

pharmacology, hygiene, medical microbiology and health care, <strong>in</strong>ternal medic<strong>in</strong>e, dermatology and venereal<br />

diseases, ear, nose and throat diseases, diseases affect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> teeth, mouth and jaws, surgery (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g radiology and<br />

radiati<strong>on</strong> protecti<strong>on</strong>), dental preser-vati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g eurod<strong>on</strong>tics, endod<strong>on</strong>tics, period<strong>on</strong>tics and<br />

paedod<strong>on</strong>tics, dental pros<strong>the</strong>sis, orthod<strong>on</strong>tics.<br />

4. All exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s are graded. The grades are: very good (1), good (2), satisfactory (3), unsatisfactory (4), <strong>in</strong>sufficient (5),<br />

bad (6).<br />

The exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> board issues a certificate <strong>on</strong> every exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> accordance with <strong>the</strong> established samples. The<br />

certificate <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> dentistry (Zeugnis über die zahnärztliche Prüfung) is a dental diploma <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

sense of Article 3a(1) of Directive 78/686/EEC and is recognised by <strong>the</strong> EC Member States.<br />

Licens<strong>in</strong>g, doctoral degree, specialisati<strong>on</strong><br />

A dental licence is issued <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis of <strong>the</strong> dental degree exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> certificate if <strong>the</strong> applicant is a German nati<strong>on</strong>al, an EC<br />

nati<strong>on</strong>al or a Stateless foreigner and if <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r requirements are met.<br />

A dental licence entitles <strong>the</strong> holder to practise dentistry <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Federal Republic of Germany <strong>on</strong> a permanent and <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

basis.<br />

Acquisiti<strong>on</strong> of a doctoral degree <strong>in</strong> dentistry, Dr. med. dent. (academic degree), is based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s govern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

acquisiti<strong>on</strong> of doctoral degrees established by <strong>the</strong> medical schools and departments.<br />

A doctoral degree <strong>in</strong> dentistry is not required to practise dentistry or for fur<strong>the</strong>r medical specialisati<strong>on</strong>.
