literary history from <strong>the</strong> Enlightenment to <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>temporary era<br />

(5 credits);<br />

textual analysis (5 credits) <strong>in</strong> two of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g: prose, poetry and drama.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>termediate studies (20 credits), <strong>the</strong> students focus <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> history of criticism and c<strong>on</strong>temporary literary <strong>the</strong>ory. A more<br />

detailed study of major works of 20th century literary criticism is required. They also study <strong>in</strong> detail a special field <strong>in</strong><br />

literature, several opti<strong>on</strong>s be<strong>in</strong>g available. Students learn to analyse a specific problem <strong>in</strong> some field of comparative literature<br />

and to apply a <strong>the</strong>oretical approach <strong>in</strong> practice.<br />

History of literary criticism (5 credits), which c<strong>on</strong>sists of two units: history of literary criticism and major works of<br />

literary criticism <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 20th century;<br />

Literary criticism, special subject areas (5 credits), two of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g: Opti<strong>on</strong> I; Opti<strong>on</strong> II (e.g. journalistic criticism,<br />

creative writ<strong>in</strong>g etc.); children’s literature; popular literature;<br />

Literary <strong>the</strong>ory (5 credits), two of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g: structuralism, semiotics and narratology; post-structuralism and<br />

dec<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>; post-modernism; fem<strong>in</strong>ist <strong>the</strong>ory and criticism; cultural studies; phenomenology and reader-resp<strong>on</strong>se<br />

criticism; psychoanalysis and criticism; opti<strong>on</strong>al <strong>the</strong>ory;<br />

Sem<strong>in</strong>ar (5 credits), <strong>the</strong> Bachelor’s <strong>the</strong>sis is written dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ar.<br />

The aim of <strong>the</strong> advanced studies (20 credits) is to develop <strong>the</strong> student’s ability to do <strong>in</strong>dependent research. The student is<br />

expected to atta<strong>in</strong> extensive knowledge of <strong>on</strong>e or two special fields and to master <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cepts, <strong>the</strong>ories and methods of<br />

<strong>the</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Aes<strong>the</strong>tics and philosophy of literature (5 credits)<br />

Literature, special subjects (5 credits);<br />

Literary <strong>the</strong>ory, special subjects (5 credits);<br />

Sem<strong>in</strong>ar (5 credits).<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong>, a pro gradu <strong>the</strong>sis (20 credits), i.e. Master’s <strong>the</strong>sis, is required.<br />

Students of comparative literature can choose <strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>ors freely. They often study F<strong>in</strong>nish or Swedish literature, art history,<br />

musicology, <strong>the</strong>atre research, aes<strong>the</strong>tics, modern languages, philosophy, history or social<br />

sciences.
