These two-year courses which, <strong>on</strong>ce aga<strong>in</strong>, come under <strong>the</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>sibility of regi<strong>on</strong>al or prov<strong>in</strong>cial adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong>s, are<br />

generally set up thanks to <strong>the</strong> cooperati<strong>on</strong> of a great variety of <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>al bodies: technical <strong>in</strong>stitutes, universities, local<br />

authorities, and <strong>the</strong> organisati<strong>on</strong>s resp<strong>on</strong>sible for <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>al tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g system. Study organisati<strong>on</strong>, based <strong>on</strong> a comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

<strong>the</strong>oretical less<strong>on</strong>s with applied exercises and practical activities, are generally modelled <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> pattern of university<br />

educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Even if <strong>the</strong>ir qualificati<strong>on</strong>s fall with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>al, and not <strong>the</strong> nati<strong>on</strong>al official system, <strong>the</strong> above <strong>on</strong>e- or two-year courses of<br />

vocati<strong>on</strong>al tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at post-sec<strong>on</strong>dary level may be compared to those offered <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r countries by certa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s of n<strong>on</strong>university<br />

higher educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Also tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses at a higher professi<strong>on</strong>al level — comparable to <strong>the</strong> post-Lauream programmes of c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong> run by universities — have been rapidly expand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last 20 years, <strong>on</strong>ce aga<strong>in</strong> set up <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>itiative of <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>s, ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own, or, more frequently, <strong>in</strong> cooperati<strong>on</strong> with <strong>in</strong>dustries and commercial firms.<br />

(d) Istituti superiori di scienze religiose — ISSRs<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Higher</strong> Institutes for Religious Sciences should be menti<strong>on</strong>ed, a type of <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s — outside <strong>the</strong> official<br />

university system — offer<strong>in</strong>g educati<strong>on</strong> and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for prospective teachers of <strong>the</strong> Catholic religi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> Italian schools of<br />

every type and level.<br />

ISSRs are run by <strong>the</strong> Italian Catholic Church authorities, under <strong>the</strong> supervisi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Holy See. The first were established <strong>in</strong><br />

1986, immediately after <strong>the</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g of Act No 121 of 25 March 1985, ratify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> new agreement between <strong>the</strong> Holy See and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Italian Republic (8/02/1984).<br />

ISSRs run three- and four-year courses lead<strong>in</strong>g to different qualificati<strong>on</strong>s, both c<strong>on</strong>nected with <strong>the</strong> knowledge and teach<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Catholic religious doctr<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

The basic admissi<strong>on</strong> requirement for both <strong>the</strong> three- and four-year courses <strong>in</strong> religious studies is <strong>the</strong> Italian diploma di<br />

maturità.<br />

Studies are organized after <strong>the</strong> university pattern: subject courses, annual or semestral, may be fundamental (compulsory) or<br />

opti<strong>on</strong>al; class attendance is obligatory; as for teach<strong>in</strong>g methodology, traditi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

lectures alternate with sem<strong>in</strong>ars and teamwork. The approach to <strong>the</strong><br />

various subjects is ra<strong>the</strong>r a <strong>the</strong>oretical <strong>on</strong>e, as is typical of <strong>the</strong> Italian<br />

academic traditi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Each subject course implies <strong>the</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> corresp<strong>on</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, usually oral; semestral subject courses may result<br />

<strong>in</strong> written exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s. Before <strong>the</strong> relevant academic degrees may be c<strong>on</strong>ferred, <strong>in</strong> additi<strong>on</strong> to all <strong>the</strong> subject exams <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir curricula, students have also to pass a f<strong>in</strong>al comprehensive exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> — always oral — and f<strong>in</strong>ally prepare and<br />

defend a <strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

The two courses result respectively <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g qualificati<strong>on</strong>s: diploma <strong>in</strong> scienze religiose (three years), and magistero <strong>in</strong><br />

scienze religiose (four years). When tuiti<strong>on</strong> is based <strong>on</strong> distance technologies, <strong>the</strong> above courses are extended to four and five<br />

years respectively.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to po<strong>in</strong>t 4.3 of <strong>the</strong> agreement between <strong>the</strong> Italian M<strong>in</strong>ister for Educati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> President of <strong>the</strong> Italian Bishops’<br />

C<strong>on</strong>ference (14 December 1985), <strong>the</strong> degree called magistero <strong>in</strong> scienze religiose (four or five years) is recognised by <strong>the</strong><br />

Italian State as a university sec<strong>on</strong>d level qualificati<strong>on</strong> entitl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Catholic religi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> all Italian schools, at all<br />

levels (primary, lower sec<strong>on</strong>dary and upper<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>dary).<br />

In c<strong>on</strong>formity with <strong>the</strong> same legislative Act of 1985, <strong>the</strong> diploma <strong>in</strong> scienze religiose entitles its holder to teach <strong>the</strong> Catholic<br />

religi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> Italian primary schools; <strong>on</strong>ly if it is comb<strong>in</strong>ed with an Italian laurea, does it allow <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> same subject<br />
